Portland man named world champion of public speaking ...

A 25-year-old Portland man was crowned the world champion of public speaking Saturday by Toastmasters International, making him the youngest person to ever win the title.

Ryan Avery beat out eight other finalists from around the world in the competition held in Orlando, Fla., with a speech titled "Trust is a Must," which addressed the importance of keeping promises.

Although Avery competed in hundreds of Toastmaster speech contests leading up to the championships, his journey to becoming world champion began six months ago. That's when the several elimination rounds started that would whittle down 30,000 participants from 116 countries down to eight finalists.

"The process has helped me grow as a person and realize that Toastmasters is an amazingly supportive organization," Avery said in a press release.

Toastmasters International is a nonprofit dedicated to teaching public speaking and leadership skills. There are 13,500 Toastmaster clubs garnering a total of 280,000 members around the world.

Avery, a member of the Portland Toastmasters club, is the director of communications and marketing with the Special Olympics Oregon and joined the Portland Toastmasters a year and half ago to improve his chances of being promoted to that job, which happened three weeks ago.

For those wanting to see Avery's winning speech, an excerpt is online.
