Real Estate Investing Outside Your Comfort Zone: BiggerPockets ...

questions

Realtor.com is working with BiggerPockets.com, to bring beginning real estate investors helpful advice and tips for getting started in real estate. Join us here each Wednesday morning for wisdom directly from the BiggerPockets team:

We all know what that ?comfort zone? thing is? right?

Every one of us has spent tremendous amounts of time and energy, clawing, scratching and almost begging to stay within our comfort zones. And to what result? To ensure that we never get too uncomfortable or have to challenge ourselves to grow and learn and advance our real estate investing business.

I don?t want to sound like some new age self-help guru, but staying in our ?comfort zones? is not helping our business. Got it?

I would like to share a recent discussion I had with one of my clients which got me to thinking about our ?comfort? zones and how it sabotages our real estate business (mostly without our even being aware of what is happening).

My client and I were discussing a situation where a contractor had performed shoddy work (who hasn?t dealt with this issue?) and that they needed to return to fix the issues. When my client approached the contractor about the issue, the contractor indicated it would cost more for them to fix their poor work. Something that this client seemed ?comfortable? paying for!

Did you notice that ?comfort? thing present itself?

As we discussed the situation, I recommended that my client needed to demand more from this contractor and require them to correct their poor workmanship with no addition expense to my client. I could tell from his complete silence that my suggestion was taking him outside of his comfort zone ? as he would have preferred to just pay the contractor, get the job done and move on.

It was clear that pushing on this contractor was not something that would be easy for this client to do!

What a great learning opportunity for this client knowing that he would have to push back on this contractor, demand that they perform their work with quality and most importantly gain the confidence, by getting outside his ?comfort? zone, to better and more effectively negotiate with other contractors.

Well, that is what this client did. He got outside of his comfort zone, pushed back, found that life did not end has he had known it, and is now better prepared to stretch his comfort zone yet again.

The question for each of you is this?

Do you find yourself stuck, afraid to make a decision, to stand up for your business, to take a managed risk? In short, is your business being sabotaged by your ?comfort zone??

In preparing for this article I came up with a handful of items that may prove you are stuck in your ?comfort zone?.

Here they are?

1. You may be stuck in your ?comfort zone? if you are ?uncomfortable? making low-ball offers because you don?t want to insult the seller.

2. You may be stuck in your ?comfort zone? if you are ?uncomfortable? seeking out private lenders because you were never taught to ASK for money.

3. You may be stuck in your ?comfort zone? if you are ?uncomfortable? negotiating directly with sellers and sabotage the negotiations by not bringing a purchase contract to the meeting.

4. You may be stuck in your ?comfort zone? if you are ?uncomfortable? demanding that your contractors do their job correctly within budget and on time.

5. You may be stuck in your ?comfort zone? if you are ?uncomfortable? evicting a tenant.

6. You may be stuck in your ?comfort zone? if you are ?uncomfortable? talking to banks about loans for your projects.

7. You may be stuck in your ?comfort zone? if you are ?uncomfortable? saying NO to prospective tenants because they don?t qualify.

8. You may be stuck in your ?comfort zone? if you are ?uncomfortable?? YOU FILL IN THE BLANK!

I think you get the concept I am conveying in this article. It is very simple?

The more you are willing to get outside of your ?comfort zone? the sooner your business and success will accelerate.

WINNOWED: Curfewed Night: By Basharat Peer ? Book Review

I had read this book immediately after it appeared it print in 2008. Recently I happened to re-read it and found that it has lost none of its authenticity or relevance. A work of non-fiction by Basharat Peer, a journalist who now lives in the US, Curfewed Night is the story of Kashmir, Peer?s Kashmir and, my, my, what a tale it is!

The first dozen odd pages tell us the story of Kashmir prior to commencement of the insurgency in January 1990. Peer?s prose is excellent and his description of life in Kashmir reminded me of a collection of Armenian short stories (?We Of The Mountains?) I had read many, many years ago. Life in the valley was simple, sweet and straight forward. It also reminded me of Kerala a little bit, what with farmers holding government jobs ? Peer?s father is the headmaster of a government school and his father a civil servant ? working nine to five and taking care of their fields and crops after office hours.

Until the troubles erupted in 1990, Peer tells us that Kashmiris weren?t not too political. They supported the Pakistani cricket team when it played India but otherwise, their political affiliation with either side was lukewarm. Even Peer, the son of a Kashmiri civil servant, cheered for Pakistan. Peer doesn?t explain why this should be so. No, Peer doesn?t question Kashmir?s accession to India ? he merely tells us that when Pakistani tribesmen supported by the Pakistani army invaded Kashmir, Maharaja Hari Singh decided to join India and that Sheikh Abdullah, who was a friend of Nehru, supported the Maharaja.

In the beginning, Peer?s narrative is essentially what he himself saw in those turbulent days rather than a holistic one. Peer is very sympathetic to the Kashmiri freedom movement and dreams of joining the militants. Once again, there are no long drawn (ideological) explanations as to why Peer wants Kashmir to be independent rather than be a part of India. Peer tells us that the militants killed many Pandits and those who survived left the Valley. Many classrooms became half empty. Some of Peer?s friends went off to join the militants and never returned. Peer makes it clear that the Pandits? departure made him sad, but his support for the militants doesn?t abate as a result.

The average Kashmiri?s support for the insurgency is shown to be tempered with pragmatism. Ordinary people do their best to dissuade militants from attacking convoys near their houses out of fear of having to bear the brunt of the army?s retaliation. Just as in Mirza Waheed?s ?The Collaborator?, Peer too shows the Indian army and paramilitary forces as overwhelmingly strong and powerful. Peer doesn?t hesitate to tell us of casualties suffered by the militants, but is silent on the number of soldiers or paramilitary men killed. For example, Peer tells us how once JKLF militants attacked an Indian army convoy that passed by their village. All villagers fled to the neighbouring village before the attack began. No, no one even thought of warning the army, though, before fleeing, they did (unsuccessfully) plead with the militants to attack the convoy elsewhere. Peer and his family returned the next day and they found bullets inside their house. We are not told of the outcome of the attack on the convoy ? most probably Peer thought it irrelevant to his story.

One of the best things about Peer?s tale is that he manages to bring out the human side of the militants?. Peer tells us how Asif, a militant, gave up fighting.

'One day our commander told us that we had to attack an army convoy. I picked up my Kalashnikov. We were about to leave and I began shivering. I was too scared and death seemed so real. I left soon after that. My commanders were kind enough to let me go.?

If you thought that Curfewed Night is all about violence and anger and hatred, you couldn?t be more wrong. Peer does not fail to see humour even when the talk is of fighting and death.

'One morning a young man from our village who worked in Srinagar gave a speech at the mosque. He grabbed the microphone and shouted, ?Kabiran kabira!? The slogan meant, ?Who is the greatest?? But no one understood. None of us spoke Arabic. He shouted again and there was silence ? then the adolescents in the last row, the backbenchers of faith, began to laugh. Embarrassed, the young man explained that in reply to the slogan, we were supposed to shout ?Allah o Akbar!? (God is great.) He shouted again, ?Kabiran kabira!? He was answered with a hesitant, awkward ?Allah o Akbar?. For about a year after, we teased him.'

I don?t mind repeating yet again that Peer writes very well. When Peer wants to elaborate how school students and teenagers idolised militants, he says:

?Militants wore Kamachi shoes and boys wanted Kamachi shoes. Militants replaced the stones in their rings with pistol bullets and boys replaced the stones in their rings with pistol bullets.'

After about sixty pages on militancy in Kashmir, Peer starts telling us of how he moved to Delhi, studied at the Aligarh Muslim University and later Delhi University and then found employment as a journalist. After the shift to Delhi, I started to understand Peer a lot better. Suddenly, he became someone like me, someone I could understand, even relate to, in certain respects.

The attack on the Indian Parliament made life difficult for Peer on account of his Kashmiri origin. Unable to find a Landlord who would agree to have a Kashmiri Muslim tenant, Peer considered leaving Delhi, until a kindly Kashmiri Pandit landlady gave him a roof over his head. Peer devotes a number of pages to the Syed Geelani story pursuant to the attack on the Indian parliament. Geelani was convicted by the trial court under POTA solely on the basis of a semi-coherent two and a half minute phone call made on the day after the attack. Later the Delhi High Court acquitted Geelani, quite rightly in my opinion.

Once Peer decided to tell Kashmir?s story, he went out of his way to meet victims of torture by Indian security forces, displaced Pandits and even Indian soldiers - to find out their point of view. He succeeds admirably with regard to torture victims and Pandits, but I thought his effort with Indian army men was not very impressive.

Curfewed Night is a slim volume, it does not exceed 250 pages, but is crammed with information about Kashmir. There are stories of funerals of militants, of militants switching sides and joining the Kukka Parray, of (failed) attempts by fundamentalists like Asiya Andrabi to impose a Saudi style of Islam in Kashmir and how much it takes to bribe minor bureaucrats and policemen so that relatives of innocent people killed in the violence can get some compensation. Peer also throws in bits of Kashmir?s history here and there and one gets to know of its Buddhist heritage and how it became a part of the Mughal Empire.

The only factual error I could find was when Peer tells his readers that ?Kashmir was the largest of the approximately five hundred princely states under British sovereignty as of 1947? Wiki tells me that it was Hyderabad. Kashmir came in at number two. In these matters, I trust Wiki more than Peer.

Latest developments in debt ceiling standoff (AP)

Congress has until Aug. 2 to raise the federal borrowing limit or the government will run out of money and possibly default on its debt. House Republicans say they won't raise the debt limit without equal spending cuts. President Barack Obama and Democrats have insisted that higher revenues must be included.

Tuesday's developments: Obama threatened to veto emergency House legislation that aims to avert a threatened national default, would raise the debt limit by $1 trillion while making cuts to federal spending of $1.2 trillion. The proposal would require another debt limit increase before the 2012 elections, which the White House objects to. Senate Democrats said it would never pass the Senate and conservative House members said it was too small.

Markets react: A White House threat to veto legislation that would avert a debt default pushed stocks lower. The Dow Jones industrial average fell more than 91 points. The Dow was already down 40 points in afternoon trading and lost another 50 after the White House threatened to veto the House legislation.

What's next: House Republican leaders postponed a vote on their plan, which had been set for Wednesday. In the Senate, Democratic leaders were debating Majority Leader Harry Reid's plan with no date certain for a vote.

___

Some background:

Q: What is the debt ceiling?

A: It's a legal limit on how much debt the government can accumulate. The government takes on debt two ways: It borrows money from investors by issuing Treasury bonds, and it borrows from itself, mostly from the Social Security trust fund, which comes from payroll taxes. Congress created the debt limit in 1917. It's unique to the United States. Most countries let their debts rise automatically when government spending outpaces tax revenue. Congress has increased the debt limit 10 times since 2001.

Q: What is the federal deficit, and how does it differ from the debt?

A: The deficit is how much government spending exceeds tax revenue during a year. Last year, the deficit was $1.29 trillion. The debt is the sum of deficits past and present. Right now, the national debt totals $14.3 trillion ? a ceiling set in 2010.

Q: Why is the prospect of not raising the debt ceiling so worrisome?

A: The government now borrows more than 40 cents of each dollar it spends. If the debt ceiling does not rise, the government would need to choose what to pay and what not, including benefits like Social Security, wages for the military or other bills. It also might delay interest payments on Treasury bonds. Any default could lead to financial panic weakening the country's credit rating, the dollar and the already hobbled economy. Interest rates would likely rise, increasing the cost of borrowing for the government and ordinary Americans.

Q: Who holds the $14.3 trillion in outstanding U.S. debt?

A: The U.S. government owes itself $4.6 trillion, mostly borrowed from Social Security revenues. The remaining $9.7 trillion is owed to investors in Treasury securities ? banks, pension funds, individual investors, state and local governments and foreign investors and governments. Nearly half of that ? $4.5 trillion ? is held by foreigners including China with $1.15 trillion and Japan with $907 billion.

Q: How did the debt grow from $5.8 trillion in 2001 to its current $14.3 trillion?

A: The biggest contributors to the nearly $9 trillion increase over a decade were:

_2001 and 2003 tax cuts under President George W. Bush: $1.6 trillion.

_Additional interest costs: $1.4 trillion.

_Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan: $1.3 trillion.

_Economic stimulus package under Obama: $800 billion.

_2010 tax cuts, a compromise by Obama and Republicans that extended jobless benefits and cut payroll taxes: $400 billion.

_2003 creation of Medicare's prescription drug benefit: $300 billion.

_2008 financial industry bailout: $200 billion.

_Hundreds of billions less in revenue than expected since the Great Recession began in December 2007.

? Other spending increases in domestic, farm and defense programs, adding lesser amounts.

Stock open lower, weighed down by Caterpillar (AP)

Stocks are opening lower on weak results from Caterpillar Inc.

Caterpillar, the world's largest maker of construction and mining equipment, earned less than analysts were expecting last quarter. That offset earnings gains from McDonald's and Schlumberger.

Investors are still waiting for a resolution to the impasse over raising the U.S. debt limit to avoid a default.

Caterpillar's earnings are seen as an indicator of the health of the global economy.

Just after the start of trading, the Dow Jones industrial average is down 32 points, or 0.3 percent, at 12,692. The S&P 500 is down 2, or 0.1 percent, at 1,342. The Nasdaq is up 8, or 0.3 percent, at 2,842.

Ingenuity & Pizzazz - Staging

Selling a home is never easy. However, the challenges today seem overwhelming to most sellers. The main criteria for selling real estate have always been location, size, and price but never before have presentation and condition been as important as they are today. 95% of buyers are shopping first on the Internet and ?driving-by? properties in a ?click.? Without a doubt, appealing website photos are the key to attracting buyer traffic. Visiting the property, buyers form first and lasting impressions within seconds. 90% of the population cannot visualize and base their judgments solely on what they see and how they feel, and research is proving that emotions play a much larger part of the decision making process than previously assumed.

In this tough market, buyers are also demanding and getting best value, so properties that are in good condition sell faster and for money. According to Barbara Corcoran, for every $1 a home seller does not invest in condition work, a buyer will deduct at least $3. Most buyers today are putting their full investment into the purchase price of the home and don?t have extra money for any major work. In addition, the majority of buyers do not have the time or the desire for renovation.

As professional home stagers, we cannot influence location, size and price factors. Our role is to collaborate with agents and home sellers to prepare properties for the marketplace to sell for top dollar as quickly as possible. This is impossible without thorough attention to condition issues and enhanced presentation. A successful staging process begins with a professional analytical consultation that includes specific recommendations for the homeowner. It is our responsibility not only to tell the seller what they need to do but also to make sure they understand the importance of staging and to motivate them to follow through with the recommendations. Otherwise, they will not achieve their objectives of selling quickly and for top dollar. In fact they may not be able to sell at all.

With so much at stake for home sellers, the staging consultation is critical to the preparation and marketing of the property. The expert advice trained staging consultants provide has significant financial importance. That is why real estate agents and home sellers should invest in trained professional home staging consultants. Unfortunately, many ?stagers? are not trained and make serious mistakes that can be extremely costly to the home sellers. When the staging process is ineffective this can lead to longer time on the market, increased carrying costs for the seller, reduced selling price and increased stress. These are all extremely costly consequences for a home seller.

Here are five common costly mistakes made by untrained staging consultants:

1) They give away free consultations:

My view of this is ?you get what you pay for.? Trained professional stagers understand the critical importance of the consultation as the first step in the staging process. They provide comprehensive room-by-room assessments and thorough, prioritized recommendations. They counsel, explain and motivate homeowners to invest in what needs to be done. The consultation should be value-rich.

Free consultations are generally ?meet and greet? with some general information about the benefits of staging. They are superficial and fail to capitalize on this opportunity to address all the important staging issues of the property. In many cases the lack of attention to detail and other omissions can lead to ineffective staging, longer time on the market and reduced selling prices.

2) They provide decorating advice versus marketing strategy:

Trained professional stagers know that staging is not decorating ? it?s marketing. A room can be beautifully decorated, but fail from a staging perspective. Our focus is on showcasing the best features of the property, making rooms look as bright and spacious as possible and creating buyer appeal and wow impact. Our work is strategic, always considering the buyers? preferences and the camera?s eye. Even if someone is a talented decorator, they may not be qualified to give you professional staging advice.

3) They perform check-list style assessments but don?t analyze and prioritize recommendations.

This really demonstrates the level of expertise of your consultant. The room- by-room assessment is just the beginning ? it is simply information gathering. Identifying the key strengths of the property, and analyzing and prioritizing recommendations in respect to market trends, buyers? wish lists, and budget issues provides the homeowner with a clear understanding of not only what has to be done but why these actions are so important. This expert consulting advice helps sellers make the best financial decisions.

4) They don?t know how to handle sensitive issues so avoid them.

Mastering the art of difficult conversations with home sellers is a key skill for professional home stagers. We are trained to address sensitive issues with home sellers and understand that it is imperative for us to do so. One strong negative impression can override a list of positive factors and prevent a sale. These sensitive issues can include odors, cleanliness problems, unattractive and dated d?cor, clutter, an abundance of religious items, provocative art, etc. A lack of understanding and or skill in handling these issues is not an excuse and avoiding them can be a very costly mistake.

5) They fail to motivate the client with an action plan.
Professional home stagers know that it is not enough just to tell home sellers what they need to do. The true test of an effective consultation is that the consultant has been able to motivate the sellers to follow through with the recommendations. Trained staging consultants understand that the staging recommendations may seem overwhelming to their clients, but by outlining a feasible action plan, they will inspire confidence and demonstrate their ability to help with some or all of the process. Trained professional home stagers are serious business owners who are experts at consulting, design planning, problem solving, project management and showcasing. A home seller is far more likely to get the best advice, follow through with the necessary staging process and succeed at selling faster for top dollar if they invest in a consultation with a trained staging professional.

?Another outstanding webinar from Nairn. I?m happy to have had another opportunity to learn from her breadth of knowledge and experience. I had to look back at my receipt to see if I really only pay $49 dollars for this webinar because what I got in return was a steal. Every single slide was packed with invaluable advice, and I came away with a whole new perspective and awareness of how I should conduct my consultations going forward. I might sign up for it again in a few months to make sure I?m on track.?
Susi Pereira, Well Dressed Home

?I thoroughly enjoyed your Webinar. It was motivating and very easy to follow. I was able to take down excellent notes. These are wonderful guidelines which I will review frequently. You are an excellent speaker and know why you were an award winning professor at Concordia. Signing up for your Webinar was well worth my INVESTMENT??Many thanks.?

According to a Microsoft spokesman, the Sony-Microsoft.com and Microsoft-Sony.com domain registrations last week were nothing but "a defensive domain hold," in case of cybersquatting I suppose. I'd be inclined to believe them, if it weren't for this little rumor of them teaming up for a console. [@fxshaw via Kotaku] More »

Grandparents and Intergenerational Activities Resource Guide ...

?A child needs a grandparent, anybody?s grandparent, to grow a little more securely into an unfamiliar world.? ? Charles and Ann Morse

Charles and Ann got it right. Even if you never knew your biological grandparents, having a grandparent-figure in your life adds a richness and security that is beyond measure.

(That being said, anytime we use the words grandparent or grandchild from this point on, know that it can also apply to an intergenerational relationship.)

Grandparents have an immediate advantage in the knowledge that comes from having lived a greater span of years. Of course, living longer doesn?t automatically make one wise, but you cannot deny the fact that the longer you live, the m ore you learn, know, and grow.

In 1978, Jimmy Carter established a new national holiday: Grandparents Day. Held annually on the first Sunday after Labor Day, Carter saw fit to celebrate these influential people who shape many lives, even beyond those in their own family circles, often without even knowing they?ve done so.

The Numbers
When a child is born, so are grandmothers.? ? Judith Levy

Officially, the United States is home to 70 million grandparents, which represents one-third of the population, say the experts at Grandparents.com. And every year, 1.7 million people hear the life-changing news: ?You?re gonna be a grandma/pa soon!? and are added to the grandparent roster.

Some Grandmas and Grandpas are miles away from their families, but in 44 million American households, grandparents rule the roost. Grandparents are raising grandkids ? and even great-grandkids ? for any number of reasons, and the numbers are expected to grow. By 2015, says Grandparents.com, 50 million households will have Nana/Pop-Pop as the head.

Even if they are not raising their grandkids, 72 percent of grandparents regularly provide care for their grandchildren, and this care takes on many forms: changing? diapers, accompanying grandkids for doctor?s appointments, driving them to/from school or other activities (I have many fond memories of being picked up and dropped off at school by my grandparents), making meals, and more.

The U.S. Census Bureau?s Current Population survey discovered that 5.3 percent of households (6.2 million) in the United States are multigenerational, up 5 million since the year 2000.

The Nomenclature
It?s such a grand thing to be a mother of a mother ? that?s why the world calls her grandmother.?? Author Unknown

Grandma, nana, grandmother, grammy ? the names represent the diversity of grandparent-types and the grandkids who often bestow these sometimes-wild, always-endearing titles.

Glam-ma, Popsi, and John: those are just a few of the newest, hippest grandparent names on the block, as a new wave of boomer grandparents opt for a twist on the old classic.

Tips for Selecting a Grand-Title
If you?ve just received the news that a grandbaby is on the way, start thinking about what you might like to be called. Talk it over with your kids, try a few names on for size, but be prepared: whatever you decide may be trumped by what comes from the mouths of babes.

Have fun with this process. Classic names like Grandma or Nana are perfectly fine, but push the envelope a bit and explore the world of possibilities. Grandparents.com breaks their lists down by category, offering traditional (Grandad, MomMom), trendy (Ace, Coco), playful (Upsy, TeePa) and internationally-themed names (Lola, Deda).

Grandparents & Technology
Our grandchildren accept us for ourselves, without rebuke or effort to change us, as no one in our entire lives has ever done, not our parents, siblings, spouses, friends ? and hardly ever our own grown children. ? Ruth Goode

Perhaps one of the most brilliant titles I?ve seen of late headlined this Wall Street Journal piece: OMG! My Grandparents R My BFF! The article itself is fantastic, too, covering the positive shift in grandparent-grandchild communication (even competition) via social media, online games, Skype, and other technological advances.

Writing a letter to Gram about summer camp or getting a birthday card from Poppy are still meaningful activities, but of course, those events happen only a few times a year. For all its negatives, today?s technology fosters daily connections between grandparents and grandchildren that were simply not possible before.

Maybe it?s because more grandkids have their own phone at a much younger age, or because more boomers and seniors are online (75 percent of them, to be precise, as per Grandparents.com). But whatever the reason, Andrew Carle, professor and director of the Program in Senior Housing Administration at George Mason University, says this:

?When the baby boomers went to college and moved away, we lost an entire generation of connection between grandparents and grandchildren. They saw each other once or twice a year, and there was a real disconnect. Now with technology, we are regenerating those bonds. People say technology is so impersonal, but we are watching it being used to reconnect one of the most personal and important relationships of the species.?

So if you?ve been avoiding the Verizon store, apprehensive about downloading Skype, or unwilling to give Facebook a go, think twice. You could be missing a great opportunity for getting to know your grandchildren ? and without your adult child?s supervision. Because according to Sam Levenson, ?The reason grandchildren and grandparents get along so well is that they have a common enemy.?

Resources for Connecting with Grandkids, Virtually
Consult these sites for online communication opportunities beyond the usual suspects, or to stay up on the latest & greatest in the gadget world (thereby improving your chances of snagging the coveted World?s Coolest Grandpa title).

What Grandparents Want
Being grandparents sufficiently removes us from the responsibilities so that we can be friends.???? ?Allan Frome

Ask any grandparent if they see their grandchildren enough and they?ll probably say no (with the exception, perhaps, of those who are part of a GRG ? grandparents raising grandchildren ? family or multigenerational household).

About 60 percent of grandparents live close to the grandkids, and 46 percent wish they lived closer.

Grandchildren are often the major motivating factor for older adults making a move, as a number of recent articles have indicated. Many empty nest boomers that consider downsizing to a smaller home or moving to an active adult retirement community may base their decision on how close they can be to the grandchildren.

Why do they want to be so close? The experts at Grandparents.com estimate that 72 percent of grandparents say their role is ?the single most important and satisfying thing? in their life, and 90% are more than happy to break out the brag book on any occasion and talk about what their little ones (and grown-up ones) are doing.

Building the Grandparent-Grandchild Bond
Some may prefer to keep a comfortable physical distance between their children and grandchildren, but most grandparents want to be involved in tangible ways, no matter how many miles are in between.

Traveling with Grandkids
Grandparents are there to help the child get into mischief they haven?t thought of yet. ?????????????????? Gene Perret

As many as 81 percent of grandparents enjoy spending all or part of their grandkid?s summer vacation together, and 66 percent travel with their grandkids, as per Grandparents.com. The fact is, many grandparents have more money, more time, and less responsibility than their children, and they?re happy to spend it on grandkids.

Each year, $77 billion travel dollars are spent by grandparents. And the only thing that could be more fun than going to G-pa and G-ma?s house for summer break is to go on a vacation trip with G-ma and G-pa. Of course, trips like these take some planning and coordination, but not much more than any normal vacation would.

Resources for Successful GrandTravel
Check out these sites for tips, checklists, special packages, and ideas on taking a safe and successful intergenerational vacation.

It?s hard to top going to summer camp with Grandpa, but a great way to maximize intergenerational travel is to let the grandkids plan the trip. Read more about it in our recent blog post on this not-so-crazy-as-it-sounds idea: Letting the Grandkids Plan Your Summer Vacation.

Intergenerational Activities at Home
A house needs a grandma in it. ? Louisa May Alcott

Traveling is grand, but nothing beats home sweet home, and if you have to fly there, drive there, or go over the river and through the woods to go there, Grandmother?s house is a wonderful place to be.

I have countless memories of being at my grandparents? homes over the years ? sleepovers with cousins that included watching back-to-back episodes of Green Acres on Nick at Nite, baking in Grandma?s kitchen (she?d let us experiment and never imposed a recipe on us unless we asked ? consequently, there were many inedible creations produced), the smell of Italian sausage, meatballs, pasta and parmesan cheese, long summer days (and nights) in the pool. They should really amend the famous quote: ?There?s no place like Grandma?s home.?

Resources for Playing at Home
Playing on the Wii, cooking in the kitchen, tinkering in the garage, a game of chess, rounds of hide and seek, or a quiet afternoon reading books together ? there is no limit to the fun you can have when the grandchildren come to play. But for rainy days, days when the kids are bored no matter what you suggest, or just for general reference, check these sites.

Intergenerational Activities in the Community
Nobody can do for little children what grandparents do.? Grandparents sort of sprinkle stardust over the lives of little children.? ? Alex Haley

They make great mentors, tutors, counselors, therapists, coaches, community leaders, and companions. Grandparents are hugely influential, super-dependable volunteers with a lifetime of experience to offer. I mean, who wouldn?t want a Grandpa to hang out with at school, or to serve soup with at the shelter? And it?s pretty hard for CEOs and directors to say no to such invaluable help.

Resources for Getting Involved in Your Community
Organizations, businesses, communities, and individuals count themselves blessed when volunteer grandparents are around. Explore the opportunities for blessing at these sites.

Elephants and grandchildren never forget.? ? Andy Rooney

Sadly, though, grandparents afflicted with Alzheimer?s or a related dementia do forget. And while it?s absolutely heart wrenching for a child to watch their grandparent succumb to these cognitive disorders and diseases (and conversely, for the grandparent to realize they?ve forgotten their grandkids? names, among other monumental losses), visits should not be stopped, communication should not be cut off. Children are incredibly resilient. They will remember what their Grandpa was like before he got Alzheimer?s, and they will remember what he was like with it.

Resources for Dealing with a Grand?s Dementia
It?s painful to go through it, but it?s a necessary growing experience. Ease the sting with these books and programs.

  • A children?s book by Maria Shriver, What?s Happening to Grandpa? is most appropriate for young children (ages 4-8).
  • HBO?s Grandpa, Do You Know Who I Am? is at times extremely difficult to watch, but as the five stories of children ages 6-15 unfold, viewers get a clear picture of just how much ?the kids? do understand.
  • Mem Fox?s Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge is one of the most beautiful, most tender, most natural portrayals of memory loss I?ve ever seen/read ? a timeless classic for all ages.

Just Can?t Get Enough?
If becoming a grandmother was only a matter of choice, I should advise every one of you straight away to become one.? There is no fun for old people like it! ? Hannah Whithall Smith
