Verbal And Written Communication Skills Are Essentials Of ...

Verbal and written communications skills are essentials of strategic management. Managers must be able to talk and listen to employees. They must also be able to speak in front of groups. Written communication is also important. No longer is business writing just sending paper letters and memorandums via postal mail or fax. Effective written communication now includes e-mail, text messaging, and social networking.

Supervisors must be able to talk face to face with staff. Open lines of communication demand that managers have the ability to listen as well as speak. A condescending attitude from the boss is a sure way to derail morale in an organization. If employees perceive a lack of respect for their work or input, they will not give their best effort.

Eventually every manager has to speak before a group of some kind. It will most likely be in staff meetings. Other possibilities include company meetings or seminars. Speaking in front of co-workers, owners, or industry leaders is an opportunity some relish and others fear. Speaking in these types of situations can be nerve racking but can lead to career advancement. Practice and experience are the best way to succeed.

Written communications between management and staff used to be a matter of mailing typed messages or circulating memos through inter-office mail. Fax machines made communications much faster but still required writing or typing messages before sending. By outlining a memo or writing a rough draft prior to the final product, messages were proofread and corrected. In this way a clear message was delivered.

Instant forms of communication are now available to managers. E-mail and text messaging are fast ways to get news, emergency notifications, or policy changes to staff members no matter where they may be located or traveling. The drawback to this instant communication is that the middle steps in the writing process are often bypassed. Many times incorrect information is sent out and then corrections must be sent.

Extra care must be used by managers to avoid sloppy mistakes in spelling and grammar as well as bad information. This is even more crucial in the social networking arena. Not only are the instant mistakes still possible, but they are more public when posted in this way.

These electronic tools have become essentials of management. To be an effective modern communicator, however, extra care must be taken before hitting enter or send. By keeping this in mind managers can improve their performance dramatically.
