Anne Hathaway Has One Song

anne-hathaway-song-one

Though we?ll see her as Catwoman in this summer?s The Dark Knight Rises and she performs a chill-inducing rendition of ?I Dreamed a Dream? in the Les Miserables trailer, Anne Hathaway is lining up a more smaller scale project to tackle in the near future.? Variety reports that the actress is in early talks to produce and star in the indie drama Song One.? The pic would reunite Hathaway with her Rachel Getting Married producers Marc Platt and Jonathan Demme.

Kate Barker-Froyland will be making her feature directorial debut with the film in which ?Hathaway would play a young woman who returns home after her brother is injured and romantically connects with his favorite musician, who draws inspiration from the siblings.?? The actress has yet to fully commit to the project, but Variety notes that she has a fairly open schedule for the rest of the year.? With an Oscar nomination under her belt and two high profile roles, her schedule likely won?t stay open for long.

SPI Receives Distinguished Budget Award | South Padre Island

The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) announced that the City of South Padre Island has received the GFOA?s Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its fiscal year 2011budget. This was the City of South Padre Island?s first attempt to acquire this recognition and only 30% of the first time submittals received the award.

The award represents a significant achievement by the entity. It reflects the commitment of the governing body and staff to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting. In order to receive the budget award, the entity had to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation. These guidelines are designed to assess how well an entity?s budget serves as a policy document, financial plan, operations guide, and a communications device.

When a Distinguished Budget Presentation Award is granted to an entity, a Certificate of Recognition for Budget Presentation is also presented to the individual or department designated as being primarily responsible for achieving the award. This has been presented to the South Padre Island?s Chief Financial Officer, Elizabeth A. Free.

For the fiscal year 2010 budget period, a total of 1,289 entities received the award. Award recipients have pioneered efforts to improve the quality of budgeting and provide an excellent example for other governments throughout North America.

?This award demonstrates the City of South Padre Island?s commitment to financial leadership and highlights the Finance Department?s dedication to best practices, said City Manager Joni Clarke.

The Government Finance Officers Association is a nonprofit professional association serving nearly 17,400 government finance professionals throughout North America. The GFOA?s Distinguished Budget Presentation Awards Program is the only national awards program in governmental budgeting.

For additional information, please contact Chief Financial Officer Beth Free at (956) 761-3049 or at BFree@MySPI.org.

Potential new HIV vaccine/therapy target

ScienceDaily (May 30, 2012) ? After being infected with simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) in a laboratory study, rhesus macaques that had more of a certain type of immune cell in their gut than others had much lower levels of the virus in their blood, and for six months after infection were better able to control the virus.

SIV is a retrovirus that infects primates. Strains of SIV that crossed over to humans resulted in the evolution of HIV. In rhesus macaques, SIV causes simian AIDS (though in many primates it is harmless) and studying the virus in these animals offers crucial insights into how HIV acts in humans, the researchers said.

The discovery by researchers at UCSF may shed light on the mystery of why some people infected with HIV are better able to control the virus, live longer and have fewer associated health problems than others who have been infected as long, they said. It also provides a potential new target for developing therapies or vaccines.

The cells that have the protective effect, called Th17 (T helper 17) cells, are a subset of the type of disease-fighting immune cell targeted and killed by HIV and found in the gut of both primates and humans.

A prior study from the same UCSF team found that SIV infection causes a normally protective immune response to infection to go awry, leading to reduction in the protective activity in the gut of these Th17 cells and weakening of mucosal defenses against bacteria. Interestingly, in that study, Th17 cells were not affected by SIV in another primate, African green monkeys, in which SIV infection is harmless and does not cause disease.

"Animals with more of these Th17 cells were better able to control SIV and this was due in part to macaques developing a more effective immune response by producing more SIV-specific CD4-positive T-cells to fight the infection. Our next step is to see if we can augment the Th17 effect, perhaps by looking at interleukin 17 (IL-17), the cytokine released by these cells, and testing to see if it has an effect," said the study's primary investigator, Dennis Hartigan-O'Connor, MD, PhD, assistant professor of medicine at the UCSF Division of Experimental Medicine.

"Further, if a treatment can be developed to increase Th17 cells in the gut, it may allow for a more effective immune response after exposure to an HIV vaccine or the virus itself," he added.

The findings are being published in the May 30, 2012 issue of Science Translational Medicine.

In the new study, the investigators first determined the levels of Th17 cells in the gut of sixteen rhesus macaques and then infected them with SIV. They found that the animals with more Th17 cells to begin with were better able to control the virus. They then gave animals drugs that deplete Th17 cells and found that reducing the number of Th17 cells made controlling SIV more difficult for those animals.

"We found great variation in the levels of Th17 cells, with as much as a five-fold difference in numbers between animals. e are not sure why this is the case. It could be genetically determined or perhaps due to a previous exposure to a type of bacteria that stimulates production of Th17 cells," said Hartigan-O'Connor.

This study is part of a series of investigations undertaken by researchers at the UCSF Division of Experimental Medicine into how SIV, and by extension HIV, interacts with the immune system in the gut. The previous study was focused on chronic infection and persistent inflammation in the gut.

"The earlier study addressed the cause and consequence of inflammation after infection. We found that inflammation induces an enzyme that knocks out Th17 cells, which normally help to keep the gut intact, and that disease progression was faster. Reciprocally, we have now found that animals do better if they have many Th17 cells at the outset of infection. We are gradually increasing our understanding of this important aspect of the immune system and we are working to translate this understanding into an approach that benefits patients," said study senior author, Joseph M. McCune, MD, PhD, chief of the UCSF Division of Experimental Medicine.

Study co-investigators include Bittoo Kanwar from UCSF Division of Experimental Medicine and Kristina Abel and Koen K. A. Van Rompay from the University of California, Davis.

Funding for this research was provided by the National Institutes of Health, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the California National Primate Research Center, the National Center for Research Resources and the Harvey V. Berneking Living Trust.

'My heart's broken': New Yale grad mourned

Marina Keegan via Facebook

Writer and activist Marina Keegan.

By Sevil Omer, msnbc.com

Marina Keegan had just graduated from Yale University and was about to begin a dream job at The New Yorker. But Keegan, 22, was killed in a car crash Saturday and is being mourned as "an exceptional person, wildly talented, and with the confidence and character ... to have done fine things."

Keegan?wrote her last piece for a special edition of the Yale Daily News, the student newspaper, which distributed it at the Class of 2012?s commencement exercises earlier this month.

The newspaper republished?the essay, "Opposite of Loneliness," after her death.?It includes these lines: "We?re graduating college. We?re so young. We can?t, we MUST not lose this sense of possibility because in the end, it?s all we have.?

Read Marina Keegan's essay "Opposite of Loneliness"

On Saturday, Keegan and Michael Gocksch, 22, her boyfriend from New York and fellow Yale 2012?alum, were headed to join Keegan?s parents in Cape Cod, Mass., according to the Cape Cod Times.?Their road trip was in part to revise a musical that Keegan had written with two collaborators. The production was slated among performances at the New York International Fringe Festival this summer, the Cape Cod Times reported.

Keegan?s parents, Tracy and Kevin Keegan, told the Cape Cod Times that state troopers brought news of the accident.?Keegan was a passenger in a 1997 black Lexus that had drifted off the road and into the right guardrail, the Cape Cod Times reported. The car then careened across two lanes, hit a guardrail on the left, and rolled over at least twice, according to the Times.

Keegan died at the scene; Gocksch treated at Cape Cod Hospital and released, a hospital spokesman?told the newspaper.?

"My heart's broken," Kevin Keegan told the Cape Cod Times.

Keegan took on Wall Street recruiters on her college campus last year, served as president of the Yale College Democrats and was a member of Yale Occupy Movement, according the Yale Daily News.

This summer, Keegan had been looking forward to moving to Brooklyn: She?had been?hired at The New Yorker as an editorial assistant.?

?We were saddened to learn of the death of Marina Keegan, who was to start work at The New Yorker on June 11th; she had just graduated from Yale, where, by all accounts, she was an extraordinary presence,? The New Yorker said in a statement Tuesday. ?Her colleagues at The New Yorker were eagerly anticipating her return, and their thoughts, as well as those of the wider staff, are with her family and friends.?

Yale College Dean Mary Miller informed the Yale community of the tragedy in an email Sunday. "Marina was an exceptional young woman, an outstanding student and a dear friend and a vibrant member of this community," Miller said in the email, the Yale Daily News reported. "Her death is a tragedy for all who knew her."

?Marina was someone who looked at the world and knew it had to be changed, but at the same time saw there was beauty in it,? Yael Zinkow, a friend, told the Yale Daily News on Sunday.

?She was an exceptional person, wildly talented, and with the confidence and character (and personal modesty) to have done fine things,? English lecturer John Crowley, who advised Keegan on her writing concentration senior project, wrote in an email to the Yale Daily News. ?Her loss can?t be expressed ? to those who knew her, to her family, to her friends ? but the loss also to the world that lay before her."

Today's Highlight in History:

On May 28, 1912, the Senate Commerce Committee issued its report on the sinking of the Titanic. Sen. William Alden Smith, R-Mich., chairman of the special subcommittee that looked into the disaster, cited a "state of absolute unpreparedness," improperly tested safety equipment and an "indifference to danger" on the part of the ship's captain, Edward Smith, as being among the causes of an "unnecessary tragedy."

On this date:

In 1533, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas Cranmer, declared the marriage of England's King Henry VIII to Anne Boleyn valid.

In 1863, the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, made up of freed blacks, left Boston to fight for the Union in the Civil War.

In 1892, the Sierra Club was organized in San Francisco.

In 1940, during World War II, the Belgian army surrendered to invading German forces.

In 1959, the U.S. Army launched Able, a rhesus monkey, and Baker, a squirrel monkey, aboard a Jupiter missile for a suborbital flight which both primates survived.

In 1961, Amnesty International had its beginnings with the publication of an article in the British newspaper The Observer, "The Forgotten Prisoners," by lawyer Peter Benenson.

In 1972, Edward, The Duke of Windsor, who had abdicated the English throne to marry Wallis Warfield Simpson, died in Paris at age 77.

In 1985, David Jacobsen, director of the American University Hospital in Beirut, Lebanon, was abducted by pro-Iranian kidnappers (he was freed 17 months later).

In 1987, to the embarrassment of Soviet officials, Mathias Rust (mah-TEE'-uhs rust), a young West German pilot, landed a private plane in Moscow's Red Square without authorization. (Rust was freed by the Soviets the following year.)

Ten years ago: NATO declared Russia a limited partner in the Western alliance. President George W. Bush told Pope John Paul II at the Vatican he was concerned about the Roman Catholic Church's standing in America because of a sex-abuse scandal. NBC announced that Brian Williams would succeed Tom Brokaw as anchor of its "Nightly News" after the 2004 presidential election. Mildred Wirt Benson, creator of the "Nancy Drew" children's mystery stories, died in Toledo, Ohio, at age 96.

Five years ago: The United States and Iran broke a 27-year diplomatic freeze with a four-hour meeting in Baghdad about Iraqi security. President George W. Bush, during a Memorial Day visit to Arlington National Cemetery, honored U.S. troops who had fought and died for freedom and expressed his steely resolve to succeed in the war in Iraq. Miss Japan Rita Mori was crowned Miss Universe 2007 at the pageant in Mexico City.

One year ago: President Barack Obama praised Poland's transition to democracy following a meeting in Warsaw with President Bronislaw Komorowski. After a four-year blockade, Egypt permanently opened the Gaza Strip's main gateway to the outside world. Why Blogging Is No Longer Optional If You Do Business Online ...

?

By Christine Gallagher

I know, I know. I can hear some of you groaning now! Many of you already have a blog and understand its importance in gaining visibility for your business. But I know many others are still resistant to the idea. You believe it takes too much time and effort, you don?t think you are a great writer, you don?t know how to set one up, you don?t know what to write about?.I understand all of the reasons that may be holding you back.

If you already have a traditional, ?brochure? style website for your business that?s great. You should keep that as a place for prospective clients and customers to visit to find out more about you and what you offer. I use my blog as my main site, meaning I don?t have a separate, static website. That?s a personal choice. Many people choose to have both, with the blog being linked to from the main site.

If you don?t currently have a blog, there are several important reasons why you should consider it:

Visibility: If you are doing even just some of your business using the web then you obviously need to have an online presence. Having a blog that you post to regularly is a wonderful way to capture and keep the attention of your prospects. When they see that you are posting consistently updated content, they are more likely to return to your site.

Search Engine Optimization: This doesn?t mean you need to study up and implement a ton of SEO techniques yourself. But blogs by their very nature are dynamic, meaning the content is updated often. In Google?s eyes, this is a very good thing-it shows that their users are getting fresh information. A blog is a great way to get your business to rank well in the search engines.

Community Building: By allowing comments on your posts you are promoting conversation and encouraging feedback. It can even help you to perform ?market research? and find out what it is your target market needs from you. This feedback can also be helpful for coming up with ideas for future posts.

Positions you as the Expert: Something interesting happens once you begin posting useful content regularly and attracting subscribers. You become seen as a thought leader in your niche. This leads to more opportunities, more relationships and more business. It?s a terrific way to communicate the value of what you have to offer to prospective clients and customers.

Personality Sharing: Blogging gives you a chance to be seen as a real person and not just a business. Be willing to express opinions and let your true self shine through. This will go a long way towards humanizing you in the eyes of your readers.

In my opinion, the best thing about blogging is how simple and quick it is to publish a post at the push of a button. It?s also wonderful to be able to track exactly how many people are coming to your blog and where they are coming from. Just install Google?s free Analytics tool and you can see detailed statistics on your visitors and traffic.

Just begin and get it going. Aim to post once a week. They don?t have to be long posts and they don?t have to be earth-shatteringly brilliant. As with anything, you?ll get better at writing the more you do it. Jot down any ideas that come to you for posts as you go about your day. I keep a file of topic ideas that I think of and I find this helpful to look at if I get stuck for what to write about.

Blogging should be something you carve out time for just as you would any other marketing activity. If you really feel you would have nothing to say to people who may want to hire or buy from you, then perhaps it is just not for you. But I encourage all small business owners who are doing business online to at least give it a try. You never know, there may be people out there just waiting to hear your voice.

Xbox 720 gains Microsoft acquisition

We?ve seen Apple, Google, and Facebook buy other companies and then integrate their technology within a new product or service. Facebook did it recently with their new Camera app, and now it looks like we?re getting a few hints towards the new Xbox 720, as we like to call it, receiving deep Skype integration thanks to Microsoft purchasing the VOIP company not so long ago.

Why do we think the Xbox 720 will gain from Skype? Around one month ago a job posting was published on Linkedin that had been titled ?Lead Program Manager? for Xbox. Within the content of this job posting you can see that this is a job at Skype headquarters in London, and that they?re creating a role for someone to help with new video and voice experiences for ?the next generation of Xbox?, now it couldn?t be more clear than that.

Xbox 720 gains Microsoft acquisition

You can read more about this job posting in full below, or take a look at the Linkedin page here, which shows the key responsibility for this Skype for Xbox job. It also explains the business reasons for this project and that it?s the role of the Lead Program Manager to deliver Skype for a next generation Xbox ?to market on an aggressive schedule?.

They don?t explain what this time schedule is, sadly, and we cannot see any clues leading to a guide for Xbox 720 release date. Let us know if you spot anything crucial in the full job posting, which we missed.

All roads are leading to the new Xbox 720 although a price, graphics, and specs are yet to be revealed and unlikely to show at E3 considering Microsoft?s denial. Keep connected to In Entertainment for more Xbox 720 news, and we expect an increasing amount of solid leads like this to show as we move closer to a launch.

How would you like to see Skype integrated deeper within the Xbox 720?

Sick, Corrupt, Racist, Paranoid, Xenophobic? ? The Chinese Government Speaks

Robert recently wrote about the sometimes xenophobic media in South Korea, however, China has beaten Korea (figuratively) again, in this category.

Yang Rui, A leading Chinese TV host on state-sponsored CCTV posted to his blog a scathing attack on foreigners that is unmatched in scope by any previous attack and he did mention Korea as well:

Cut off the foreign snake heads. People who can?t find jobs in the US and Europe come to China to grab our money, engage in human trafficking and spread deceitful lies to encourage emigration . . . Foreign spies seek out Chinese girls to mask their espionage and pretend to be tourists while compiling maps and GPS data for Japan, Korea and the West, . . . ?We kicked out that foreign bitch and closed Al Jazeera?s Beijing bureau. We should shut up those who demonise China and send them packing.?

Yang went on to recommend ?China?s public security bureau to concentrate its efforts on the Beijing ?disaster zones? of Wudaokou, where many students live, and Sanlitun, a bar district and shopping area popular with expatriates.? (cite) ?Fortunately, ?A significant portion of the Chinese reactions were critical of Yang. ?This is how the Boxer Rebellion started,? ran one comment on Weibo. Several other posts referred to the antiforeigner unrest of early 20th Century China.?

All of this comes on the heals of an attack upon a Chinese woman, by a British national, that was captured on video and a netizen video of a Russian Cellist, who was propping his feet up on a train (he was subsequently fired by the Beijing Symphony Orchestra because of this incident). Per the BBC, regarding the cellist:

The video of the incident ? which has been viewed by millions of people in China ? showed him with his bare feet up on the seat in front. When the woman objected to his feet touching her head, he apparently responded with a barrage of sarcastic comments and insults in fluent Chinese.
Her response was to throw water bottles at him.
Chinese media have reported that the train guard told the woman to ?forget it ? he is an artist?.

I must confess, that sort of dialog is pretty funny in itself (the guy is also a jerk, IMHO) but the video has become tender for the sort of anti-foreigner bonfire that is often sponsored by the Chinese Government.

Despite the orchestrated campaign against foreigners (including Koreans), the largest problem faced by China comes not from foreign sources but from its own government and how they will stoop to anything for power and control. ?That is a problem that can only be solved by the will of the Chinese people.

Dontre Wilson Picks Oregon Over Texas

Dontre Wilson won't be wearing burnt orange in college (Photo by the author).

The most shocking thing about what went down Friday night at the DeSoto spring game wasn't 2013 all-purpose back Dontre Wilson announcing his choice of Oregon over Texas, Ohio State, and others. It was a hectic month finally coming to a close for the speedster that saw him announce and delay his decision before returning to his original plan.

At times, it seemed that Wilson wasn't on the same page with his father and his head coach, as conflicting reports emerged from regarding the timing of his decision and his favorites, culminating in Wilson telling Horns Nation on Thursday that he was tired of the recruiting process ($) and wanted to get it over with.

Oregon has always seemed like a better fit for Wilson than Texas, as Chip Kelly's offense will take full advantage of his skillset, something that the Longhorns can only promise, but not show any evidence of delivering. Co-offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin could only try to sell Wilson on the idea of playing in a DJ Monroe role, except he would actually get the football. Wilson didn't buy it.

In terms of how it impacts Texas recruiting, it doesn't much. It keeps open another spot, but Wilson has been such a longshot for so long that he hasn't figured heavily into serious analysis of the state of recruiting for the 'Horns. A luxury take ever since the addition of Daje Johnson in the 2012 class, losing Wilson isn't much of a blow for Texas, despite his prodigious talents.

TSU football banned again from postseason

For the second consecutive season, Texas Southern's football team will face NCAA sanctions this fall for shortcomings in retaining and graduating student-athletes, including a ban on postseason play and practice limitations that will extend into next spring, the school announced Friday.

TSU's announcement, based on the results of a meeting last month with NCAA officials, came in advance of the NCAA's disclosure next week of Academic Progress Report scores for all colleges and universities.

The news came almost one year to the day from the announcement that TSU would lose 14.78 scholarships for the 2011-12 school year because of APR shortfalls, the most severe sanctions levied by the NCAA against any school in the country.

And now, TSU faces another year of penalties. Because of its shortcomings in the NCAA report to be released next week, TSU said it will not be eligible to compete in the Southwestern Athletic Conference championship game or the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs this fall.

For the second consecutive year, its football practice schedule and its out-of-season schedule will be cut by four hours per week, and it cannot stage spring practice or a spring game in 2013. All lost hours must be replaced by hours of academic-related activities, the school said.

Ray of light on horizon

Still, TSU athletic director Charles McClelland is "confident that we are heading in the right direction" with academic reforms designed to retain and graduate student-athletes.

He said that based on current academic performance, TSU will exceed NCAA requirements next year and will not face a third year of APR sanctions.

"Texas Southern University athletics is a much-improved program today, and despite this setback we are proud of the improvements that we have made to date in all 16 programs," McClelland said in a statement issued by the university.

A second year of APR-related sanctions is not unexpected.

A year ago, TSU staff member Michael Moleta, a former NCAA staff member hired to monitor the department's academic performance, said the school could post perfect APR numbers ? retaining and graduating every eligible player ? and be in danger of future NCAA sanctions.

McClelland, though, was adamant in his assertions TSU has improved significantly during the current academic year, the results of which will be factored into the four-year APR average a year from now, and that its APR troubles are about to end.

"We have totally revamped our football program," he said. "We're 100 percent about academics. And you will see the numbers that will bear that out."

Awaiting probe results

McClelland said the school announced the upcoming penalties in advance of the NCAA's release of the latest APR figures "because it was our prerogative to do so."

TSU also is awaiting the results of an NCAA investigation that could include evidence of academic irregularities during the last decade prior to McClelland's arrival at Texas Southern University and could include events that took place under former football coach Johnnie Cole, who led the Tigers to the 2010 SWAC championship and was dismissed in the spring of 2011.

Former Franklin County manager charged by Washington Attorney General's Office

The Washington Attorney General's Office filed charges Friday against a former Franklin County manager accused of stealing at least $1.8 million from the county to support his gambling and $100-a-day cocaine habit.

Dennis M. Huston of Pasco is charged in Franklin County Superior Court with first-degree theft, money laundering and possessing cocaine.

State prosecutors say Huston, 65, fraudulently submitted invoices and payment requests for Critzer Equipment Co., then deposited the money into a company bank account between March 1990 and February 2012.

Franklin County officials suspect Huston stole another $1 million during that period, but Janelle Guthrie, the attorney general's communications director, said the state can't prove Huston had the money sent to Critzer Equipment before the company closed in November 2001.

Investigators allege that after the legitimate Spokane company folded, Huston continued to use the company's name to steal county money for vehicles parts never delivered.

The state claims he was stealing from $123,000 to $220,000 a year between 2002 and 2011 while he was the county's public works accounting and administrative director.

The invoices ranging from $4,000 to $9,000 were for various equipment parts, and typically two to three payments were made each month, documents said.

The alleged embezzlement was discovered earlier this year by the Franklin County Auditor's Office when employees were checking vendors.

When another check came through for approval at the end of January, Huston was caught on a surveillance video making a deposit at the bank with the Critzer Equipment business account.

Huston initially was arrested Feb. 2, but then was released while county and state officials investigated the theft allegations. He then was fired by county commissioners.

Huston could not be reached by phone Friday at his home. He remains out of jail and is scheduled to enter a plea June 12. Assistant Attorney General Scott Marlow will prosecute the case.

"There is no concern that he is a flight risk," Guthrie said, noting he is still in the Pasco area after being released from jail Feb. 7.

Court documents filed Friday allege Huston told Pasco police officers that he had been submitting false invoice vouchers for Critzer Equipment since 1990, less than a year after he was hired by the county.

He was hired as a public works accountant in May 1989, less than eight months after he finished serving 21 months in federal custody for embezzling taxpayer money by using a fake company when he was a finance officer with a federal agency in Montana. At that time, he said he had a drug problem.

In the Franklin County case, court documents allege Huston admitted to creating the Critzer vouchers and forging the initials of others to falsely indicate the voucher had been reviewed, the part received and placed in inventory, according to court documents.

Huston told police he created invoices for Critzer on his county computer and set up passwords needed to access the invoices, according to documents.

Huston told the officers he used the money from the Critzer bank account to buy cocaine and gamble at a local casino, according to court documents.

He also told investigators that he used the money to pay personal bills and make credit card payments.

When he was arrested, he had cocaine, as well as a debit card, blank check and a checkbook for Critzer Equipment, according to court documents.

The state AG's office began investigating about four months ago at the request of the Franklin County prosecutor.

Prosecutor Shawn Sant said he asked the AG's office to handle the case to avoid a conflict of interest.

"I'm glad that they have finally been able to finish up their investigation sufficiently to file charges," Sant said Friday.

He said he believes the charges are appropriate.

Guthrie said that although Huston told police about his involvement in the thefts, officials still needed to conduct a thorough investigation to make sure that there was nothing else that needed to be included in the case.

She said while that investigation is not completed, prosecutors felt they had enough information to charge Huston.

Investigators also had to look into the potential involvement of other county employees, including two of Huston's children who also work for the county. The state prosecutor has determined that Huston was the only one involved in the alleged theft, she said.

The charges of first-degree theft and money laundering are class B felonies with a maximum penalty of 10 years imprisonment and a $20,000 fine plus restitution. Possessing cocaine is a class C felony with a maximum penalty of five years imprisonment and a $10,000 fine plus restitution.

Also, Franklin County has sued Huston and his wife for the $2.8 million he allegedly stole.

Foot Problems Caused by Flat Feet | Baby care | Health and Fitness ...

Pes planus, or level feet, occurs when the curved structure on the underside of your foot collapses. This causes the lower extremity to flatten out. The shifting power of determination be very gradual. It may take years for the alignment to vary in the toe. As the toe pushes outward, you will shrink to see the head of the metatarsal bone urgent against the skin. This is the commencement stages of bunion formation.

Forge Toes

Hammer toes shape the same way bunions do. The fallen arches origin misalignment of the toes. When the bones push ascending, the middle joint can move out of alignment. The attrition from your shoes attrition against that joint causes corns to shape and eventually a bony structure that becomes a forge toe.

Tendon Inflammation

Tendons are not thin cords that attach muscles to the bones. At the time this fibrous tissue becomes irritated, it can dilate. This condition is tendonitis. Through tendonitis, you will feel penalty when you try to put weight on your lower extremity. If you have flat feet, tendonitis can get a chronic problem. Repeated incidents of sinew inflammation may cause permanent injury to the muscles and connective tissue of the lower extremity.

(AP) ? The oldest woman to climb Mount Everest said Friday she finally felt she had gotten old when she scaled the world's highest peak last weekend.

Tamae Watanabe, 73, beat her own age record for an Everest climb by a woman set 10 years ago. She also recovered from an accident in 2005 when she broke her back and feared she could never climb again.

"It was much more difficult for me this time. I felt I was weaker and had less power. This time it was certainly different, I felt that I had gotten old," Watanabe told reporters Friday on return to the Nepalese capital Katmandu from the mountain.

She reached the summit from the Tibetan side May 19, at the age of 73 years and 180 days.

That same day, more than 200 climbers set out for the summit on the busier southern route in Nepal. Four died, apparently from altitude sickness and exhaustion, on one of the deadliest days on the mountain.

Watanabe said what surprised her, compared to her earlier climb, was the effects of warmer temperature on the mountain.

"There was a glacial lake formed near the base camp from the melting ice which our cooks could fetch water from," she said adding she is now encouraged to do campaign against global warming.

She now wants to help younger female climbers back in Japan to take up climbing high mountains.

The oldest Everest climber is 76-year-old Min Bahadur Sherchan of Nepal, who ascended in 2008.

Automotive-style Reliability for Rockets | Moonandback

by michael belfiore

If you want to make space travel truly affordable and turn it into a mainstream business, you have to do better than the conventional single-use designs that have been a standard for decades.

Reusability is a major step in that direction, but as we?ve seen with the Space Shuttle, reusability doesn?t necessarily bring affordability?not when hundreds of hours of refurbishment is required between flights.

With that in mind, XCOR Aerospace has been developing rocket components that are not only reusable, but also as serviceable as ordinary automotive parts. It?s all about making space travel as commonplace as any other mode of transportation. Which would, of course, change everything. Passenger rocket flights have the potential to make the Concord look like the Wright Flyer.

A key piece of the technology puzzle, as XCOR engineers see it, is fuel and oxidizer pumps. Their latest innovation, announced today, is a liquid oxygen piston pump. ?The ability to ensure low cost and easy, repeatable manufacturing of critical pump technology over a 30 to 40 year product lifecycle is a major factor in why we chose this piston pump technology,? said Andrew Nelson, XCOR Chief Operating Officer in a press release.

The device will go into the company?s Lynx suborbital rocket plane, which XCOR CEO Jeff Greason has told me could begin flight testing as soon as this year.

Michael Belfiore is an author, journalist, and speaker on the innovations shaping our world. He has written about game-changing technologies for Popular Science, Popular Mechanics, New Scientist, Smithsonian, Invention & Technology, and the Financial Times among others.

Idapt Universal Charger i4

Desk clutter, tangled cables, and piled up power bricks are a foregone conclusion for most tech enthusiasts. The Idapt Universal Charger i4 ($59.99 direct) aims to help the slovenly connected sluggards of the world with a modular dock that puts all your power needs into a single box. The attractively designed base station can charge up to four of your devices simultaneously, occupies just one wall outlet, and has a modular design that allows the dock to adapt to your ever-growing collection of gadgets and gizmos. It's a bit expensive and doesn't sync any devices, but the i4 is a well-built and future proof dock that can streamline your charging needs. ??

inline

The Idapt Universal Charger i4 resembles an upside-down topless pyramid, measuring 1.26 by 6.65 by 5.31 inches (HWD) and 10.6 ounces. It's made entirely of plastic, but feels sturdy and well built, with small rubber feet on the bottom to keep it from sliding around. The top is covered with a glossy plastic (in either black or white) with a Power button and three openings for the modular charging-tip pods. Each opening also has two Eject buttons and a power indicator LED that glows red for charging or green for standby. On the right side is a lone USB port, and there's a detachable power cable that extends from the back of the dock. The modular pods are grey plastic?the iPhone/iPod tip was able to dock my iPhone 4S with a bumper case still on. Six charging tips are included, but the only useful ones are the iPhone/iPod, micro USB, and mini USB (also included are somewhat-outdated Nokia, Sony Ericsson, and Samsung tips.) You can also opt for a customized four-tip starter pack for an additional $2.63, or add individual tips for $9.99 each. Idapt makes over 20 different charging tips that it claims can power 4,500 different devices. Tips range from standards like microUSB and Apple's 30-pin connector to Ninendo DS and even AA and AAA battery chargers.?

The whole package works exactly as advertised, charging up to four devices simultaneously. I tested with the aforementioned iPhone 4S, an Apple iPad 2, and various Android smartphones and tablets. The smartphones all docked easily, though the pods felt a bit loose under some of the heavier and taller devices. Docking tablets on top was out of the question; instead you must use the USB port along the side. The pod spacing could be an issue for some, as the back two are too close for multiple devices that charge horizontally.

If you find yourself constantly struggling with tangled or misplaced cables and overflowing power outlets, the i4 could be a helpful addition to your gadget arsenal. It features a sturdy and attractive design, with a lot of options for charging all your gear and even rechargeable batteries. My biggest complaint is that, at $60, I wish the i4 also had the ability to sync some devices. However, the i4 does have the added value of adaptability, with its swappable charging tips, meaning it likely won't become obsolete after your next big gadget purchase.

home improvement, DIY, carpet cleaning - Great Advice For ...

There is no time to lose when it comes to home repairs, and you might feel handling the work yourself is something you don't have time for. But you're wrong! It doesn't take long to make home improvements. This guide will help you do home improvement projects easily.

When doing home improvement, be sure you know about the longevity of different items. A chimney, for example, can last upwards of a century. Wooden decks may only be useful for about 15 years. Various types of flooring can last anywhere from 20 years (vinyl) to 100 years (oak). Make sure to consider factors such as these prior to getting involved in a home improvement project.

Change the accessories to give each room of your home a fresh look. It's truly amazing the amount of difference a few bright pillows or a new wall hanging can make in a room. New drapes can also add a little something extra.

You can use 3-D tile instead of buying art for your walls. For instance, a three-dimensional tile works great if you contrast the colors. You can even buy some canvas and a frame and paint colored squares. Anything colorful can work as art.

You don't need to live in a mansion to own a chandelier. A classy-looking chandelier that can pull together an elegant living or dining room can be yours for less than five hundred dollars. Bring out the beauty in hand-cut crystal or glass chandeliers with total wattage of 200 to 400 watts.

Add some protection to all of your floors before painting. If you don't, you will have quite a mess on your wood floors or carpeting. Use layered old newspapers to accomplish this. Other alternatives include a drop cloth or large plastic tarp; both are available at most home improvement centers.

If you are using home improvement to increase the value of your home, consider the porch. A porch is something a person will see when first looking at your home. Incorporate some potted plants, or even some new paint. It's not unreasonable to believe that your home improvement project could potentially generate returns that far exceed your initial investment. Little things like this can go a very long way.

Use a check or charge card payment when you pay your contractor, so you have proof of payment and have the option to stop the payment if necessary. This will ensure that you aren't taken by a scam artist. Credit cards are a good payment method if you need to dispute the work rendered.

Be sure to turn off your water main before you begin working on your water pipes. You really need to know where the shut off valve to the water in your home is located so you can turn it off to work on the sink. Otherwise, you may flood your home!

A chandelier can look at home in any style of decor. Even some very fancy and very attractive chandeliers can be purchased for well under $500, and they can add over a thousand dollars worth of value to the home. If you want a chandelier that will stand out, try getting one that puts out 200-400 watts.

Talk to your contractor and stay honest with your budget so that he can tailor his activities to your needs. Honesty helps your contractor plan for the project. This can help them get the best deal on materials they need. This ensures that everyone wins.

Home improvement projects can range from minor to major projects. You are in good company! You have just read some tips for making home improvement easier. Hopefully, this article has rewarded you with useful knowledge that can help make your home improvement project a smashing success. You should stop reading and get improving!

Whispers of Valkath, IC

A chill wind was blowing outside the village elders house, but its current occupants do not notice, for they are safely gathered by the warm fire. Adults of various species are milling about, their hard labors of the day having been completed and dinner recently eaten. The children sit, starry eyed near the fire, gazing up at the old matriarch, a human whose age had only taken her youthful beauty and replaced it with a more mature elegance. She is resting comfortably in her rocking chair, with an old blanket laying on her lap. As she takes a gentle look at all gathered before her, a warm smile graces her face. Though her eyesight has long gone past its prime, she can still distinctly make out the faces of all who are gathered. An old cat meanders through the crowd and laboriously clambers up into her lap where it curls up and promptly falls asleep. The matriarch idly begins scratching her beloved pet behind the ears, which causes the animal to purr loudly, a quiet signal for the room to become silent. All gathered know what is to happen next, and they all seem to be waiting in awe.

"I believe for tonight, I will tell you a tale of our beloved world, Valkath. It is a story of heroes, and villains, of love, betrayal, and intrigue. It is a HISTORY, of how our world came to be as it is. It may take me many nights to finish the telling, but I assure you, every word is a priceless gem," she declares in a clear voice that surprises no one. She already has the children's rapt attention, and many of the adults are already smiling. It is a tale they've heard many times, one which they themselves grew up listening to. The room quiets down till only the crackling of the fire can be heard over the matriarchs breathing. She glances around the room, a sly grin on her face before she launches into her tale, more animated than one would expect of a woman her age,

"It all started on a day not unlike today. A mild, pleasant day. A day which seemed like any other. While not auspicious or grandiose, it would forever be a day marked by destiny! For on this day several people would begin their own journeys, each one affecting the others in ways they could not begin to fathom....."
