Piano Lessons For Beginners

Article Directory :: Arts & Entertainment Articles

Almost everyone loves music; and for many people, the logical thing to do is to learn to play an instrument. The piano happens to be one of the most popular instruments, given its versatility and the wide range of music which has been composed for the instrument. Virtually any genre of music you can think of can be and has been played on the piano, which has led to a lot of demand for piano tutorial, especially for beginning players.

There are plenty of choices accessible in terms of lessons. Depending on how you learn best and your preferences, you may find one or another type of lessons to be the right fit. If you'd like to learn more about beginning lessons and other information on how to get started playing this challenging but incredibly rewarding instrument, keep reading for an introduction.

One of the options you can choose from is to take lessons from an experienced piano teacher. One on one personal instruction has worked for many people and if there's a teacher in your city who you'd like to work with, then this may be the way to go for you.

However, this type of piano lessons doesn't work for everyone and there is one important downside to keep in mind. This of course is the cost, which can be expensive compared to other types of lessons.

You could also choose to teach yourself to play using books. For some people, this method works the best, although most people would consider this self-instruction approach to be the most difficult of all the methods of learning to play the piano. This largely comes down to the quality of the books you're using and your commitment to mastering the instrument. If you're dedicated enough and have good books to study, you can give yourself your own piano lessons this way.

Finally, there is learning piano online or with DVDs. This gives you the advantage of being able to see and hear what you're learning to play and lets you rewind and repeat lessons over and over again until you've mastered them. This method is popular since it provides many of the advantages of one on one piano lessons at a much lower cost while letting students learn at their own pace.

No matter what method of learning the piano you choose, the important thing is to stick with it and practice as much as possible. No lessons, no matter how well designed, are going to work if you're not truly dedicated to your goal.

If you'd like to learn to play the piano, you're in good company. There are many excellent teachers and wonderful self-study courses out there, so if you're serious about playing the instrument, there are piano lessons which can help you become the skilled pianist you want to be.

Republican governors concerned about primary race

(AP) ? Democratic governors are bullish on President Barack Obama's re-election prospects, citing the improving economy and a Republican nominating contest that has exposed deep divisions in the party's base.

Republican governors insist Obama is vulnerable, but they say they are concerned the prolonged primary race has alienated independent voters and may have badly damaged the eventual nominee.

Democratic enthusiasm and Republican apprehension were both on display at the winter meeting of the National Governor's Association, an annual four-day conference where states' top executives gather to discuss policy and trade ideas on best practices but where politics is always close to the surface.

In interviews, many Democratic governors seemed almost giddy about Obama's chances of winning a second term.

They pointed to the improving employment figures, which have helped raise state revenues after years of painful budget cuts. The national unemployment rate stood at 8.3 percent in January, down from a high of 10 percent in October 2009.

"These Republicans that are running for president, they're so depressing. Cheer up!" Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin said after Democratic governors left a White House meeting with Obama. "We've got some good news: a great president creating jobs, and governors who are seeing revenues rebound."

Even Democratic governors of some typically toss-up, or "purple," states in presidential elections, said they like Obama's chances.

"In a purple state people want to see results and they also want to see a level of collaboration and teamwork. I think he is going to win Colorado," the state's governor, John Hickenlooper, said.

Meanwhile, virtually no Republican governors were willing to predict their party's nominee would prevail in November.

Many lamented the drawn-out nature of the nominating process, in which the early front-runner, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, has been weakened by the intense scrutiny of his wealth, business practices and shifts on issues as well as the unwillingness of conservative voters to rally behind his candidacy. Many conservatives have coalesced recently around former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, Romney's latest strongest rival as the contest moves to primaries in Arizona and Michigan on Tuesday and 10 contests on March 6.

"I don't know anybody who thinks if you started out to design a good process to pick a president you'd choose exactly what we have now," said Indiana Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels, a former White House budget director who explored a presidential candidacy but ultimately decided against a run.

Daniels said he would not consider jumping into the race even if Romney were to lose Michigan. Some Republican leaders have said privately that if Romney does not prevail in Michigan ? a state where he was born and grew up and where his father served as governor ? the defeat could serve as an opening for a party heavyweight like Daniels to join the field.

Daniels, who has not endorsed a candidate, said he didn't believe a potential Romney loss in Michigan indicated unremitting problems with his candidacy.

"The problem I would worry about, and have all along, is that our side might not offer a bold enough and specific enough and constructive enough and, I would say, inclusive enough alternative to America," Daniels said.

Maine Republican governor Paul LePage suggested the drawn-out negativity of the contest could mean Republicans should reach for a new candidate strong enough to defeat the president.

"If they continue to beat each other up, then maybe we should get somebody unknown to go against Obama. They're damaging themselves," Le Page said. "It's like a marital battle. Somebody's got to apologize."

Some Republican governors voiced concern that social issues like contraception and gay marriage had at times eclipsed discussion of the economy in the presidential primary race.

"I do agree those social issues are not as significant as some of the economic and fiscal issues that really threaten our way of life," South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard said, saying he was worried the debate over such issues might alienate uncommitted voters.

Contraception emerged as a hot button issue last month after the Obama administration announced it would require church-affiliated employers to include birth control as part of an employee's health insurance coverage. The decision drew outrage from Catholic bishops and other religious leaders, and Obama eventually retooled the requirement to say health insurers, not the religious groups themselves, must pay for the coverage.

Many Republicans, including the leading presidential candidates, slammed Obama for what they called government infringement on religious liberty. But their hard line risked making the candidates look as though they were anti-birth control ? particularly Santorum, a Roman Catholic who has said he believes contraception is harmful to women.

The problem was further compounded when Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, a rising Republican star widely considered a contender for the vice presidential nomination, backed a controversial bill that would have required women undergo a vaginal ultrasound before receiving an abortion.

McDonnell backed down this week, asking the bill's sponsors to require a less invasive ultrasound procedure instead. But the controversy drew national attention and scorn from women's groups.

Pennsylvania Republican Gov. John Corbett said he wasn't concerned that social issues had become part of the presidential campaign, saying such topics are top concerns for many Republican voters. But Corbett, who hasn't endorsed a primary candidate, said the discussion would shift once a nominee is chosen.

"It will be the economy, the economy, the economy and it will be jobs, jobs, jobs. And I think that's exactly where it should be," Corbett said.

Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam, who has endorsed Romney, refused to predict Romney would win Tennessee when voters go to the polls there on Super Tuesday. But he said he felt confident Romney was the strongest candidate to challenge Obama in the general election, in part because he could win unaffiliated voters.

"I think we'll be in for a long election night regardless. I think the race will be close," Haslam said. "That's why it's important for Republicans to do a great job expressing our case and reaching out to independents."

Gilbert Bankruptcy Lawyers Provide Assistance With Your Financial ...

February 25, 2012 by Vet1

Bankruptcy is perhaps one of the scariest words that you can hear when it comes to your financial situation. The idea would seem scary to most people as it is seen as the nuclear option of economics. However, with all of the information out there it?s common to see bankruptcyportrayed as both the absolute end of your ability to get credit, and as a get out of debt free card that you can use whenever times get tough. There is a middle ground between the two and Gilbert bankruptcy lawyers would help in finding you that middle ground.

To begin with, you should know that bankruptcy is a legal process. Chiefly, you are giving the opportunity for you and your creditors to be able to work out your differences in court. The implication is that each case is different depending on the income of the debtor, the amount that is owed, the bankruptcy applicant?s credit, among other things. Much as it would be dangerous for a person who is accused of murder to represent himself in court due to inexperience, it would also be risky for you to file for bankruptcy without the guidance of a reliable bankruptcy lawyer.

In order for you to follow what is happening to your case, bankruptcy lawyers are there to make you understand the nuances. This can be particularly important for those that have little to no courtroom experience who could easily get lost in all ofthe paperwork and rules that they?re required to follow. When it comes to dealing with your bankruptcy case, a good attorney will ensure that you are placed in the most beneficial position possible from the streamlining they did on your case.

In your financial situation, you must make sure that you are certain that pursuing an Arizona bankruptcy is the option you desire. Before actually filing for bankruptcy, you might need to speak with an attorney to check whether you have the necessary documents and evidence required to pursue one. There is an accompanying black mark against your credit score that would make it difficult for you in the future to get credit. There are other options that a lawyer might suggest for you to take in case he sees that you could do well without having the stigma of bankruptcy associated with you.

Rocket lifts off with 3G military communications satellite | The Raw ...

By Reuters

?

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (Reuters) ? An unmanned Atlas 5 rocket blasted off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station on Friday carrying the first satellite in a new military network designed to give cellphone-like 3G communications to troops on the move.

The 20-foot(6-metre)tall Atlas 5 rocket, the most powerful launcher in the U.S. inventory, lifted off at 5:15 p.m. EST (2215 GMT), darting through sunny skies as it soared over the Atlantic Ocean to deliver the Navy?s first Mobile User Objective System satellite into orbit.

The spacecraft, called MUOS-1, is part of a planned five-satellite network that will operate like cellphone towers in space to significantly boost communications capacity for the U.S. military and partner countries, including, for the first time, UHF satellite communications for mobile users.

?Right now, our units have to be sitting in one place, stationary, with antenna up pointing straight at a satellite to be able to use narrow-band satcom (satellite communications),? program manager Paul Ghyzel told reporters before the launch.

?As we bring MUOS online, we bring up the capability that allows them to move around the battle space and be able to continue communicating beyond line-of-sight (of the satellite),? he said.

The system is ?basically like a cellphone tower in the sky,? added Mark Pasquale, MUOS program manager and vice president with satellite builder Lockheed Martin.

?You can think of the handheld user terminals as robust, rugged smartphones,? he said.

MUOS voice, video and data services will be available to users whether they are in vehicles, ships, submarines, aircraft or simply on foot, though that cell phone-like capability probably won?t come until next summer.

General Dynamics C4 Systems, the prime contractor for the handheld user terminals, is still working on the technology needed to communicate with MUOS? 3G-like system. Until then, users can tap the satellite?s heritage narrow-band communications system, which is similar to what is currently aboard the Navy?s aging UFH Follow-on satellites.

Overall, MUOS is designed to provide military users 10 times more communications capability over existing systems, including simultaneous voice, video and data.

Weighing nearly 15,000 pounds (6,804 kg), MUOS-1 is the heaviest satellite launched to date by an Atlas rocket, which is built and flown by United Launch Alliance, a partnership of Boeing and Lockheed Martin.

The MUOS network, including launch vehicles, will cost the U.S. military more than $5.3 billion.

The efforts of population screening for prostate cancer save lives ...

20 years: researchers in Innsbruck, Austria, evaluated data from Tyrol in Austria, where early diagnosis and treatment plan has been established for over 20 years and found that these programs have been associated with reduced mortality in areas where Effective treatment is available to all men. The project started in the Tyrol in 1988, offers free prostate-specific antigen for men aged 45-75 years by 1993. In men with organ confined lesions, prostatectomy has been recommended , 86.3 % of patients with T1 or T2 disease were treated with radical prostatectomy for low morbidity of 8.7 per cent with brachytherapy, and 8.7 % with radiotherapy. After one year, 95.9 % of men younger than 65 years. The researchers found that by 1996 a significant reduction in mortality from prostate cancer was observed in the Tyrol. In the years 2003-2008, the mortality rate for prostate cancer decreased by 48 %, 55 %, 52 %, 49 %, 41 % and 64 % , respectively. The researchers concluded that when the detection and treatment are available and free, mortality from prostate cancer screening reduces the effort of the population scale. The AUA believes that early detection and risk assessment for prostate cancer should be offered to asymptomatic men 40 years or older who have a life expectancy of 10 years.

What is the actual number needed to screen and treat to save one life with PSA screening?

In Canada, one adult and two pediatric cases of RBF have been reported since 2000. However, between January 2006 and September 2007, the Sainte-Justine Hospital treated a confirmed case and two suspected cases.

It is a population-based test to save lives, and if so, how many men need to be tested in order to save a life? These issues have been addressed by the best specialists of prostate cancer to 105 Annual Scientific Meeting of the Urological Association .

Read Through Small Business Accounting Software Reviews ...

February 20th, 2012

It is true that there is more than what meets the eyes in a small business accounting software review. It is also true that there is large number of small business accounting software doing the round in the market. It is also doubly true that many of them promise the sky and deliver not even the clouds. So how do you get to know the right software from the wrong one? How do you separate the rice from the husk? You need not believe the numerous small business accounting software reviews that plague the web site, but you can form opinions based on them.

There are as many small business accounting software reviews as there are software themselves; may be two to three times more. But then the small business accounting software reviews are not expected to be hundred percent neutral. May be there are a few users who also comment about the software. If you look at many of the freeware that is available as small business accounting software, they would have reviews which are neutral. Even there, you might find, manufacturer sponsored small business accounting software reviews that are far from neutral. Most of these reviews carry citations and performance indexes that might not be completely trustable. But that is not something you should really worry about. Because the small business accounting software reviews that you see on the web or on any of the magazines, you will know the intentions of the writer within the first few sentences.

Once you know what it that the writer is driving at is, you will only take what you feel are true comments and not take everything. This way, whatever the writer is writing does not make much sense to you except those points you are keen to know. Everyone will always lace their statements amidst truth. As all that you need to do is remove the chaff and take the real words. This is the case with most of the small business accounting software reviews that you might find online. For the real neutral reviews you need to hunt around a bit. Not all sites can be proud of being neutral. Identify these sites that would ensure you get neutral reviews all through for all the products of your interest.

Similar is the case with the comparisons and benchmarking that is normally done by magazines. They even declare winners of contests. But then to what extent are these contests valid and to what extent are these evaluations right? Most of the companies invariably raise objections to the methods of evaluations and would launch their own versions of it. You need to take everything with a pinch of salt. These comparisons however bring out some of the common features that all these products have and certain others would form the core of further small business accounting software reviews that might appear elsewhere. All these would be needed for you to draw your own conclusions. Take the benchmarks from all the parties to draw your own conclusion.

(AP) ? John Glenn joined the proud, surviving veterans of NASA's Project Mercury on Saturday in celebrating the 50th anniversary of his historic orbital flight.

The first American to orbit the Earth thanked the approximately 125 retired Mercury workers, now in their 70s and 80s, who gathered with their spouses at Kennedy Space Center to swap stories, pose for pictures and take a bow.

"There are a lot more bald heads and gray heads in that group than others, but those are the people who did lay the foundation," the 90-year-old Glenn said at an evening ceremony attended by NASA officials, politicians, astronauts and hundreds of others.

"We may be up on the point of that thing and get a lot of the attention, and we had ticker-tape parades and all that sort of thing. But the people who made it work ... you're the ones who deserve the accolade. So give yourselves a great big ovation," Glenn said, leading the crowd in applause.

Glenn and fellow astronaut Scott Carpenter, 86, spent nearly an hour before the ceremony being photographed with the retirees, posing for individual pictures in front of a black curtain with a model of a Mercury-Atlas rocket. Glenn and Carpenter are the lone survivors of NASA's original Mercury 7 astronauts.

Earlier in the day, the Mercury brigade traveled by bus to Launch Complex 14. That's the pad from which Glenn rocketed away on Feb. 20, 1962.

Some retirees were in wheelchairs, while others used walkers or canes. Most walked, some more surely than others. But they all beamed with pride as they took pictures of the abandoned pad and of each other, and went into the blockhouse to see the old Mercury photos on display and to reminisce.

As retired engineer Norm Beckel Jr. rode to the pad Saturday, he recalled being seated in the blockhouse right beside Carpenter as the astronaut called out to Glenn right before liftoff, "Godspeed John Glenn."

But there's more to the story.

"Before he said that, he said, 'Remember, John, this was built by the low bidder,'" Beckel, 81, told The Associated Press.

The Mercury-Atlas rocket shook the domed bunker-like structure, although no one inside could hear the roar because of the thick walls.

"Nothing was said by anybody until they said, 'He's in orbit,' and then the place erupted," Beckel recalled.

Beckel and Jerry Roberts, 78, a retired engineer who also was in the blockhouse that historic morning, said almost all the workers back then were in their 20s and fresh out of college. The managers were in their 30s. "I don't know if I'd trust a 20-year-old today," Beckel said.

"They don't know it, but we would have worked for nothing," said Roberts, who spends the winter in Florida.

Bob Schepp, 77, who like Beckel traveled from St. Louis, Mo., for the reunion, was reminded by the old launch equipment of how rudimentary everything was back then.

"I wonder how we ever managed to launch anything in space with that kind of stuff," Schepp said. "Everything is so digital now. But we were pioneers, and we made it all work."

The Mercury team included women, about 20 of whom gathered for the anniversary festivities. One pulled aside an AP reporter to make sure she knew women were part of the team.

"Most of the women here are wives," said Lucy Simon Rakov, 74. But not her.

"We weren't secretaries. We were mathematicians," said Rakov, a pioneering computer programmer who traveled from Boston for the reunion.

Patricia Palombo, 74, also a computer programmer, said working on Project Mercury proved to be the most significant thing she's done in her career.

Glenn's flight was the turning point that put America on a winning path that ultimately led to the moon.

"It's been downhill from here," Palombo said with a laugh. She lives near Washington, D.C.

Roberts praised the wives who endured the hardships back then. He recalled how he and his colleagues worked 16- and 18-hour days, seven days a week, especially after the Soviet Union grabbed the prize of first spaceman with Yuri Gagarin in 1961. Gagarin reached orbit on his mission; another Soviet cosmonaut also rocketed into orbit before Glenn's voyage.

Many marriages ended in divorce because of the excessive workload, Roberts noted. Turning to his wife, Sandra, he said proudly, "This gal's been with me for 57 years."

"Not that many," she told him. "We're going to be 55."

"Fifty-five. That's right, that's right," Roberts muttered.

"Golly, gosh, when you get old, you forget about numbers," Schepp piped up.

NASA's celebration of Glenn's three-orbit, five-hour flight aboard the Friendship 7 capsule began Friday at Cape Canaveral. The festivities move to Columbus, Ohio, on Monday, the actual anniversary. Glenn will be honored at a gala at Ohio State University; its school of public affairs bears his name.

His wife of 68 years, Annie, who turned 92 Friday, and their two children are accompanying him to all the festivities.

Glenn served in the U.S. Senate for 24 years, representing his home state of Ohio. He ran for president in 1984. He returned to space in 1998 aboard shuttle Discovery, becoming the oldest spaceman ever at age 77.

Carpenter told the crowd Saturday that he's still waiting for his first shuttle ride, drawing a big laugh.

The Mercury 7 astronauts were immortalized in Tom Wolfe's 1979 book about the space program, "The Right Stuff," which was later made into a movie.

Although Wolfe suggested the nation will never see another hero of Glenn's stature, Carpenter noted, "Maybe one day before too long the great hero John Glenn himself may be replaced by another national hero who represents the command of a Mars crew returned safely."

"John, thank you for your heroic effort and all of you for your heroic effort," Carpenter told the Mercury old-timers. "But we stand here waiting to be outdone."

(AP) ? Gasoline prices have never been higher this time of the year.

At $3.53 a gallon, prices are already up 25 cents since Jan. 1. And experts say they could reach a record $4.25 a gallon by late April.

"You're going to see a lot more staycations this year," says Michael Lynch, president of Strategic Energy & Economic Research. "When the price gets anywhere near $4, you really see people react."

Already, W. Howard Coudle, a retired machinist from Crestwood, Mo., has seen his monthly gasoline bill rise to $80 from about $60 in December. The closest service station is selling regular for $3.39 per gallon, the highest he's ever seen.

"I guess we're going to have to drive less, consolidate all our errands into one trip," Coudle says. "It's just oppressive."

The surge in gas prices follows an increase in the price of oil.

Oil around the world is priced differently. Brent crude from the North Sea is a proxy for the foreign oil that's imported by U.S. refineries and turned into gasoline and other fuels. Its price has risen 11 percent so far this year, to around $119 a barrel, because of tensions with Iran, a cold snap in Europe and rising demand from developing nations. West Texas Intermediate, used to price oil produced in the U.S., is up 4 percent to around $103 a barrel. That's 19 percent higher than a year earlier.

Higher gas prices could hurt consumer spending and curtail the recent improvement in the U.S. economy.

A 25-cent jump in gasoline prices, if sustained over a year, would cost the economy about $35 billion. That's only 0.2 percent of the total U.S. economy, but economists say it's a meaningful amount, especially at a time when growth is only so-so. The economy grew 2.8 percent in the fourth quarter, a rate considered modest following a recession.

Gas prices are already an issue in the presidential campaign. Republican candidate Newt Gingrich spoke several times this week about opening up more federal land to oil and gas drilling as a path toward U.S. energy independence ? and lower pump prices.

"Our goals should be to get gasoline to $2.50 or less so that working families can actually get to work and retired families can travel," Gingrich said at a campaign event in Los Angeles Thursday.

High oil and gas prices now set the stage for even sharper increases at the pump because gas typically rises in March and April.

Every spring, refiners suspend operations to switch the type of gasoline they make. Supplies of wintertime gas are sold off before March, when refineries need to start making a new formula of gasoline that's required in the summer.

That can mean less supply for service stations, resulting in higher gas prices. And summertime gasoline is more expensive to make. The government mandates that it contain less butane and other cheap organic compounds because they contribute to the formation of ground-level ozone, a primary constituent in smog. That means more oil, a costlier component, is needed to produce each gallon.

The Oil Price Information Service predicts that gasoline could peak at $4.25 a gallon by the end of April. That would top the record of $4.11 in July 2008.

The national average for gasoline began the year at $3.28 a gallon. The average price for February so far is $3.49 a gallon. That's up from $3.17 a gallon last February, a record at the time. Back in 2007, before the recession hit, the average for February was $2.25 a gallon.

Prices are higher on the East and West Coasts, where gasoline has risen above $3.70 in Connecticut, New York, Washington D.C. and California. This isn't unusual ? states on the coasts charge some of the nation's highest gas taxes.

High gas prices put a strain on many people's budgets.

Americans spent 8.4 percent of their household income on gasoline last year when gas averaged an all-time high of $3.51 a gallon. That's double the percentage a decade ago. They could pay even more this year, even though demand is the lowest in 11 years as people drive fewer miles in more efficient cars, says Tom Kloza, chief oil analyst at OPIS.

Gary Goodman commutes into Manhattan from Edgewater, N.J., because gas, tolls and parking make the cost of driving prohibitive.

Goodman, an accountant, commutes by bus. He uses his car mostly for trips to the grocery store or for occasional nights out. He says he has no choice but to eat the higher gas costs.

"I already drive as little as possible," he says.

Paul Dales, a senior economist at Capital Economics says it would take a bigger shift in the global economy ? say, a deep recession in Europe or a slowdown in Asia's manufacturing ? for pump prices to drop noticeably. Either event would slow oil demand, depressing prices.

But experts expect demand to keep rising. World oil demand is expected to increase by another 1.5 percent to 89.25 million barrels a day in 2012, according to the Energy Information Administration.

In the short term, tensions with Iran are feeding fears that oil supplies could be blocked.

The U.S. and Europe are tightening economic sanctions against Iran over what the West believes is Iran's attempt to build a nuclear bomb. World leaders fear Israel may be planning a strike against Iran, the world's third largest oil exporter.

In response, Iran has threatened to withhold its own oil deliveries and to block the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway along its coastline through which one-fifth of the world's oil flows.

On Friday, an international banking clearinghouse crucial to Iran's oil sales said it is prepared to discontinue services to Iranian financial institutions being targeted by the EU and U.S. sanctions. That could ratchet up the pressure on Iran, but also send oil prices soaring.

The price of Brent crude fell 53 cents on Friday to $119.58. WTI gained 93 cents to $103.24.
