'Savages': Oliver Stone Interrogation Series, Lado Episode 4 (VIDEO)

"What the f--k else is new?"

Oliver Stone's down and dirty adaptation of "Savages" arrives in theaters on July 6, and in anticipation of the film, HuffPost Entertainment is happy to introduce you to one of its most unpredictable characters: Lado, a Mexican drug cartel enforcer.

As part of promotion for the film -- which is based on Don Winslow's celebrated pulp novel -- Stone himself directed short films revolving around each of the film's principle characters. There's Ben (Aaron Johnson) and Chon (Taylor Kitsch), a pair of SoCal drug dealers who want to take the violence out of the business. That becomes an issue when Elena (Salma Hayek), the head of a Mexican drug cartel, wants a piece of the action -- so much so that she orders the kidnapping of O (Blake Lively), Ben and Chon's mutual girlfriend. Naturally, Lado (Benicio Del Toro) is the one ordered to carry out the dirty work.

HuffPost Entertainment has debuted new clips from Lado's interrogation over the last month. In the latest installment, Lado reveals a little more about his relationship with Dennis, a DEA agent.

Check out these to see what Ben, Chon, Elena and O have to say for themselves this week, and watch the shorts in the gallery below.

Chon: LA Confidential
Ben: Complex
Elena: Made Man
O: AskMen

Secunia Personal Software Inspector 3.0 Final released

Secunia back in February released a first public beta version of? Personal Software Inspector (PSI) 3.0. The beta version offered a new minimalistic user interface that we found to be most appealing to inexperienced computer users, as it did not leave lots of room for interpretation. Existing PSI users on the other hand may have noticed then that Secunia cut down on the information the program did provide its users with in previous versions. This included the removal of threat ratings, detailed version and program information, as well as links to advisories and other related information.

Secunia PSI 3.0 final is now available on the official project website. It is compatible with 32-bit and 64-bit Windows XP SP3 or newer operating systems. Administrative privileges are required to install and run the program.

When you start the program for the first time you notice that the interface does not seem to have changed ever since the beta version of the application was released in February. All you can do is click on the scan button to have the program scan your system for software installations.

The program versions are then compared with an online database to identify programs that need updating. A system score is generated and displayed based on the update level of the system and its programs.

secunia psi 3

All programs that require updating are displayed on the top, and depending on those, you may see an installation dialog right away triggered by PSI, or are asked to pick an interface language first before installation commences.

Programs that have not been identified by Secunia right away can be added manually via the add program link. Before you can do that, you may need to add the Secunia website to the list of trusted sites in Internet Explorer (which is used by the program).

If you do not want updates to be installed automatically, you need to disable the preference under Settings > install updates automatically. It would obviously have been better if users were asked on first start whether they wanted to make use of the feature.

You can add or remove drives that you want to scan under Settings as well. By default, only the main drive will be scanned by Secunia PSI.

The only remaining feature is a list of previously installed updates under History. Well, only remaining is not entirely correct, as you can also use the share to Twitter or Facebook feature, or sign-up for the Secunia community.

Closing Words

Part of the program has been dumped down, which I personally do not like at all. The idea was probably to make the program easier to use. All it basically takes is to click on a button to have Secunia scan the system and install programs automatically in most cases.

It is still a useful program to run regularly to make sure your software is up to date.

Are the Colorado wildfires the biggest in US history? (+video)

The Waldo Canyon Fire has been declared the worst in Colorado state history, but it is small compared to the fires in the 19th century that scorched millions of acres.

The Waldo Canyon Fire has been declared the worst in Colorado state history. With its flames still raging out of control, it has destroyed 346 homes in Colorado Springs, killed at least one person and burned an estimated 18,500 acres of land thus far. Meanwhile, the High Park Fire is charring pine forests in nearby Fort Collins.?

But how do the Colorado wildfires compare to history's biggest blazes?

During the 19th and early 20th centuries, huge uncontrolled wildfires periodically arose that destroyed millions of U.S. acres, according to the National Park Service (NPS). In 1825, the Great Miramichi Fire burned 3 million acres in Maine and New Brunswick and killed at least 160 people. Two decades later, Oregon's Great Fire of 1845 blazed for weeks and downed 1.5 million acres of old-growth timber.

More than 1 million acres were turned to ash again in Oregon in 1865, in South Carolina in 1898, in Idaho and Montana in 1910 and in Minnesota in 1918.

But the fieriest day in U.S. history was Oct. 8, 1871. Flames engulfed the Midwest: The Peshtigo wildfire burned 3.78 million acres of Wisconsin and Michigan forest and killed an estimated 1,500 people, according to the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC). Meanwhile, a second Michigan forest fire raged, burning 1.2 million acres along with untold numbers of lumberjacks, and across Lake Michigan, the Great Chicago Fire burned the Windy City to the ground; 250 people perished and a record 17,400 structures were destroyed. [Video: The Speed of Wildfire]

The Midwest had faced a hot, dry summer that year, and the multiple blazes were probably triggered by a front that moved in over Lake Michigan and spread the flames of small land-clearing fires. Alternatively, it has been speculated that fragments from a comet impact sparked the simultaneous wildfires.

Despite modern firefighting efforts, there have also been several enormous wildfires in recent history that dwarf the destructiveness of the High Park and Waldo Canyon Fires.

In 2002, the Rodeo-Chediski Fire, which began near Cibique, Ariz., burned more than 462,000 acres, caused the evacuation of more than 8,000 people, destroyed 426 residences and cost approximately $153 million, according to NPS records ? making it the largest fire in Arizona history. That year, more than 88,000 U.S. fires cumulatively burned roughly 7 million acres.

Then in 2004, wildfires in Alaska alone burned more than 6.38 million acres, according to the NIFC. And in 2006, some 907,000 acres went up in flames in the Texas panhandle near Amarillo, killing 12.

No HIV Risk with Hormonal Injections | dailyRx

Sexually active women may wonder which form of birth control is the best way to prevent sexually transmitted diseases. Condom use is the most effective way to prevent HIV infection, says the nation?s top health agency.

A recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) amended its recommendation for women who are at risk for contracting HIV.

They say that there is no clear link between the use of injectable contraception, such as Depo Provera, and HIV infection.

Injectable Hormones are OK for women.

In an annual report, CDC scientists found that 59 percent of people newly diagnosed with HIV had a negative HIV test at some point before their diagnosis.

The team also reports that many people who are diagnosed with HIV, including high-risk women, had never been tested previously, and according to the report, people who are unaware of their HIV diagnosis are probably not taking proper steps, such as using a condom during sex, to prevent transmission of the disease.

Researchers looked at data for 57,476 people from the CDC?s National HIV Surveillance System and found that 44 percent of heterosexual women who tested HIV positive had never been tested before, or more specifically, had never received an HIV-negative test.

Other groups with the highest number of people testing positive who had never been tested before included heterosexual males (56 percent), injection-drug users (54 percent) and blacks (44 percent).

According to the CDC, about 4 million women at risk for an unplanned pregnancy are not using contraception. Meanwhile, 10 thousand new HIV infections occurred among American women in 2010, the latest year for which data is available.

These two statistics highlight the critical importance of contraception use among American women.

The CDC reaffirms its previous recommendations on contraceptive methods among women who are at high risk for HIV infection:

They say that hormonal contraception, including combined hormonal pills, progestin-only pills, depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) and implants are all safe for women.

Previous studies had demonstrated an increased risk for HIV acquisition among women who use DMPA and other injectables, though researchers are not sure how this link exists.

Also, women who don?t use condoms should be counseled about the risk for sexually transmitted disease.

The researchers also note that there are a variety of contraceptive methods available, and that condom use is the best way to prevent HIV infection.

This study was published on the CDC?s website.

HIV/AIDS

In the United States, an estimated 1.1 million people are infected with HIV (Human immunodeficiency virus), the virus that causes AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome). HIV is transmitted through sexual contact of bodily fluids (blood, semen) with mucus membranes (oral, vaginal, anal), and the introduction of infected blood products into the bloodstream (commonly sharing intravenous needles, less commonly blood transfusions).

Mothers with HIV transmit the infection to their child in utero about 25% of the time in the absence of treatment. Early infection with HIV may produce flu-like symptoms of fever, nausea and vomiting, headache, and fatigue, then disappear. HIV may take up to ten years to progress to AIDS. The virus destroys CD4+ white blood cells and opens the body up to diseases and infections that the body would normally be able to fight off (pneumocystis pneumonia, cytomegalovirus, fungal infections, toxoplasmosis) and rare cancers (Kaposi's sarcoma, Burkitt's lymphoma, primary lymphoma in the brain).

?

Diagnosis of HIV is made by a simple blood test, and AIDS is diagnosed by a CD4+ count of less than 200/microliter (normal is 500-1500). Treatment of HIV is called highly active anti-retroviral therapy (HAART) and includes hundreds of options to stop the replication of the HIV virus (Zidovudine, Lamivudine, Tenofovir, Efavirenz, Kaletra, Reyataz)

Scientists develop a spray-on battery

15 hrs.

Scientists in the United States have developed a paint that can store and deliver electrical power just like a battery.?

Traditional lithium-ion batteries power most portable electronics. They are already pretty compact but limited to rectangular or cylindrical blocks.

Researchers at Rice University in Houston, Texas, have come up with a technique to break down each element of the traditional battery and incorporate it into a liquid that can be spray-painted in layers on virtually any surface.

"This means traditional packaging for batteries has given way to a much more flexible approach that allows all kinds of new design and integration possibilities for storage devices," said Pulickel Ajayan, who leads the team on the project.

The rechargeable battery is made from spray-painted layers, with each representing the components of a traditional battery: two current collectors, a cathode, an anode and a polymer separator in the middle.?

The paint layers were airbrushed onto ceramics, glass and stainless steel, and on diverse shapes such as the curved surface of a ceramic mug, to test how well they bond.

One limitation of the technology is in the use of difficult-to-handle liquid electrolytes and the need for a dry and oxygen-free environment when making the new device.?

The researchers are looking for components that would allow construction in the open air for a more efficient production process and greater commercial viability.

Neelam Singh, who worked on the project, believes the technology could be integrated with solar cells to give any surface a stand-alone energy capture and storage capability.

The researchers tested the device using nine bathroom tiles coated with the paint and connected to each other. When they were charged, the batteries powered a set of light-emitting diodes for six hours, providing a steady 2.4 volts.

The results of the study were published on Thursday in the journal Nature Scientific Reports.?

SAGE today announced the recipient of their 2012 library travel grant for the ALPSP International Conference. Stephen Buck, EResources and Periodicals Librarian at Dublin City University Library won by answering "why should librarians be talking to publishers in 2012" with:

Librarian: We need to talk.
Publisher: Why?
Librarian: I don't want things to go sour between us.
Publisher: We are under a lot of stress.
Librarian: We'll manage.

The SAGE judging panel awarded the prize to Stephen for his original take on the brief of capturing why publishers and librarians need to work together in partnership.

"We saw in Stephen's entry the strong need for two-way dialogue between publishers and librarians to constructively address the challenges each faces by working together as partners, especially in challenging times," said Clive Parry, Global Marketing Director, SAGE. "The ALPSP International Conference provides an ideal environment for publishers to learn from and to share with the library community and we're delighted to be able to facilitate such dialogue with this travel grant."

The travel grant supports a librarian or information professional with a free place at the ALPSP International Conference from 11-13 September (www.alpspconference.org).

"I am delighted to be given the ALPSP travel award," said Stephen Buck. "Being offered the opportunity to attend the ALPSP conference will broaden my exposure to, and awareness of, the issues affecting publishers and their relationships with libraries regarding scholarly publishing, copyright, open access and new models and new ways of looking at these, and other issues. I believe that, as a librarian, attendance at a predominantly publisher oriented conference will give me an enhanced perspectives on relevant themes and will facilitate the generation of ideas and building of expertise."

IV Oxygen Foam Could Buy Breathing Time

60-Second Science60-Second Science | Health

Animals with blocked windpipes maintained stable blood oxygen levels and heart rates after receiving injections of oxygen-filled microparticles. Sophie Bushwick reports.

More 60-Second Science

Every time you inhale, oxygen passes from your windpipe to your lungs and on into your bloodstream. But what if your windpipe was blocked? Getting the gas straight to your blood could save your life. Wait, put down that syringe?a large air bubble in a blood vessel can kill you. But what if the bubbles were only a few millionths of a meter in diameter?

Researchers coated tiny amounts of oxygen gas with fatty molecules to create microparticles. Suspended in solution, the microparticles formed a foam containing 50 to 90 percent oxygen. In a beaker of blood, the foam was able to quickly transfer its oxygen to the cells.

Then the researchers tested it in animals. Normally, a blocked windpipe cuts off the blood?s supply of oxygen, leading to brain damage and death. But when rabbits with blocked windpipes received injections of the microparticles, their blood oxygen levels and heart rates remained stable. The work is in the journal Science Translational Medicine. [John N. Kheir et al, Oxygen Gas?Filled Microparticles Provide Intravenous Oxygen Delivery]

The foam may someday buy time for human patients. So that even someone with a closed airway can breathe easy.

Box app updated with OneCloud features and 50 launch partners

Box One Cloud

Box has updated their Android app, and while that's always worth knowing, this time the reason why they did it is the news. Box has announced that their OneCloud service is now ready for public consumption, and available to Android users. The premise is simple -- OneCloud is an easy way to use integrated applications to download, edit, and upload documents and files to your Box storage. There's fifty of those integrated applications, including popular apps like Dolphin and FetchNotes. As with any new service, we'll have to try it before we give out final impressions, but on the surface this looks to be great.

To help keep it great and make it even better, Box has introduced a OneCloud SDK for Android app developers, and will be on-hand at Google I/O to answer questions and get everyone on the same page, This looks to be an interesting take on cloud storage, and we're going to have a close look at it.

ITC: Google vs Apple preliminary win reviewed, iPhone and iPad ...

The Apple vs Android legal war is so complex that unless you follow it closely, you?re prone to get lost in translation and soon give up trying to keep up with who is suing who and why, and who?s scoring more wins and where.

Essentially, Apple sued the main players in the Android business so far including Samsung, Motorola and HTC for alleged patent infringement, but it didn?t go directly after Google. In turn, the three Android makers countersued Apple individually, bringing their own patents to the fight, and Google watched from the sidelines, deciding not to sue Apple directly ? it did try to provide some ammunition to HTC, but the patents it shared with the Taiwanese company were shot down in court recently.

Since Google completed its extraordinarily expensive $12.5 billion Motorola purchase?back in May, it found itself involved in a plethora of legal battles, with Apple but also with Microsoft.

When Google announced its plans to acquire Motorola last year, analysts and members of the media speculated on the fact that the Search giant is willing to pay $12.5 billion for the company in order to arm itself with a huge collection of patents, many of them essential for the cell phone business. At the time the purchase offer was made, the Apple vs Android legal war was raging on, so it seemed logical to see Motorola?s patents as important defensive and offensive weapons against Apple, and anyone else that would attack Android.

But now that Google has inherited all of Motorola?s legal predicaments, the Search giant is far from putting that impressive patent collection to good use. We?re certainly interested to see whether the conflict with Apple will further escalate, or whether the two companies will find a common ground in the near future and reach a settlement.

motorola razr vs apple iphone 4s

Meanwhile, Apple and Google are basically suing each other in various courts, both in the U.S. and in Europe, and this fight may become one of the most important battles yet in the mobile environment now that Google is directly involved.

Earlier this week, a Federal Judge decided to dismiss an Apple case against Motorola (and therefore Google) with prejudice, meaning that neither party can refile the suit in a Federal court. Both companies asked for an injunction against the other?s products, with Apple having four patents left in the fight against one of Motorola?s. At the time, Judge Posner revealed his opposition to awarding injunctions to any company based on FRAND patents, or standards-essential patents. And that Motorola patent used in the trial is a FRAND patent.

Why is this important to know? Well, Motorola scored a victory against Apple back in April at the International Trade Commission before being purchased by Google. Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) Thomas Pender found in his initial determination that Apple was infringing a 3G patent owned by Motorola. The patent, one of the four Motorola attacked with in this complaint with the ITC, targeted Apple?s iOS devices including the iPhone and the iPad. This patent is a FRAND patent as well, but not the same one Motorola used in Federal Court against Apple.

The ALJ?s initial finding was not a final decision, and the final ruling of the Commission can overturn it. In fact,?Bloomberg?on Monday reported that the ITC decided to review the ALJ?s initial determination and issue a final ruling on August 24.

Google And Motorola Ordered To Share Android Development Data With Apple

In theory, in case Google will win this battle, the ITC can award an import ban against iPhones and iPads, which would mean that Apple would not be able to bring the devices that are manufactured in China to the U.S. anymore. In case that sounds familiar, that?s what happened with HTC in one of its legal fights with Apple. The iPhone maker won an import ban with that ?data tapping? patent ? a patent it also uses against Motorola and Samsung in other suits. Also worth mentioning is that Apple and HTC are still arguing on the matter, as Apple claims that more HTC devices continue to infringe that patent, and therefore the product ban should cover 29 more devices including the HTC EVO 4G LTE and the HTC One X. That only goes to show how complicated these ITC trials are, and how product import bans affect the companies involved in these lawsuits.

But Google?s ITC complaint is slightly different as it?s based on a single patent, and that one is a standards-essential patent. Motorola is already investigated in the European Union for its FRAND patent use in such patent-based trials, right alongside Samsung, and it?s probably unlikely to see major injunctions and/or import bans on FRAND patents alone.

Moreover, various third parties formally voiced their support for Apple and Microsoft in their defending ITC cases against FRAND patents owned by Motorola including U.S. senators and Congressmen, the United States Federal Trade Commission, HP, Nokia, Intel, AT&T, Verizon, IBM, Activision Blizzard, Cisco and others.

With all that in mind, we can?t but wonder what the ITC ruling will be, but considering what?s at play and the fact that Google is only relying on one FRAND patent in this fight, an iPhone and iPad import ban seems highly unlikely. And, for the sake of the argument, the same goes for Microsoft products including the Xbox gaming console, which is targeted by Google in a different ITC case. But the two companies may end up licensing the technology from Google, or enter other settlements with the Search giant.

We?ll be back with more details about this ITC Google vs Apple case, as the two companies will have to answer to various questions from the Commission in the following months (see PDF file at the Source link below), many of them referring specifically to FRAND patents and whether they?re suitable for such import ban requests.

European Science Foundation calls for support of social science research in Central and Eastern Europe

Strasbourg, 26 June 2012 - A new forward looking report, 'Central and Eastern Europe Beyond Transition: Convergence and Divergence in Europe', has been published today by the European Science Foundation. The report aims to identify new themes for social science research in and on CEE, which can be promoted and endorsed by national and European funding institutions.

In this forward looking exercise, three interdisciplinary thematic clusters have been identified: Populations in change; New Geographies of Europe; and Social Cohesion. Populations in change aims at looking into how out/in migration, regional population change, ethnic minorities and integration all affect the basic structure of CEE populations. New Geographies of Europe focuses on the 'return to Europe', overcoming the West-East divide, on the influence of cohesion funds on local governance and on the expanding borders of Europe eastwards. Social Cohesion focuses on the degree of socio-economic transformation that post-communist Europe has undergone over the last 20 years, especially in terms of social mobility and social trust.

Peter Weiss, ambassador of the Slovak Republic in Hungary commented: "Rethinking of social science research in and on Central and Eastern Europe, setting new frontiers in social sciences and identifying main research challenges and subjects of cooperation between academics from Western and Eastern European countries is, without a discussion, one of the basic preconditions for overcoming the recent crisis in the EU".

The last 25 years have witnessed some of the most profound political, social and economic changes in Europe's history. The fall of communism at the end of the 1980s not only reshaped relationships within the continent, but also provided fascinating insights into the potential for, and limitations of, the large-scale reshaping of society.

"Social sciences in Central and Eastern Europe were seriously distorted during the communist period." explained Professor Daniel David, vice president of the Romanian Research Council (CNCS). "This Report could help us for integrating social sciences research from Central and Eastern Europe in the international area".

The report also outlines eight structural recommendations for social science research in and on CEE. These underline the need to ensure a stronger presence of CEE scholars and CEE social research issues in international level research projects. They also highlight real needs in terms of the development of research infrastructure and human capital and call for the implementation of good practices in terms of governance, scientific excellence and independence.

"The Forward Look provides a well-elaborated insight and recommendations on the place of Social Sciences and Humanities in Central and Eastern Europe and how these could and should interface with the international research project level" Robert Burmanjer, Head of Social Sciences and Humanities Unit at the European Commission commented.

The report was also praised by Karin Liebhart, president of the Central European Political Science Association: "I'd like to congratulate the entire team that worked on the report at hand. It is an excellent base for further discussion and contains a lot of detailed information and valuable insights."

Uum, maybe I should got there before I relocate to my preferable ...

You vacationed on the shores of Charleston, the beaches of California and Florida, and even along the Michigan and Wisconsin shores of the Great Lakes. You visited Cape Cod, saw lighthouses on the coast of Maine and journeyed into the Outer Banks in North Carolina. You may have even traveled abroad on a cruise to Jamaica, Costa Rica or Italy.

Remember that beach house you stayed at and felt completely relaxed? You not only fell in love with the sand between your toes, the refreshing smell of ocean air and the convenient location of the house, but you felt at home with the non-tourist local area as well. In fact, the thought of leaving to go back home is leaving you stressed and in tears. Why not enjoy the travel and leisure experience as a way of life? Turn your favorite vacation destination into a permanent residence.

Here`s how:

Before you disregard the notion of diy moving tips to your favorite vacation spot to turn it into a permanent resident as a senseless notion, realize that it is done more often than you might think. After all, isn`t that the idea behind the rush of retirees to live in hot vacation spots like Florida and why International travel has led some to buy a permanent home overseas? Don`t wait till you retire to enjoy the area you find relaxing and full of natural beauty and wonder.

Of course, holidays are relaxing in and of themselves simply because you leave the work at the office and spend your travel on leisure time with limited clutter and maybe even maid service. Be sure before you make your final decision.

Take a tour of the city to see it from the eyes of a local resident. Ask for local favorite hot spots, shopping venues and restaurants. Then, shop or eat there. Visit the city on more than one occasion. Check flight specials with airlines that fly in and out of the city from your current home. Depending on the location and distance from where you currently live, air fare can actually be quite affordable.

The first step is researching the reality of owning or renting a home in the area. You already know about hotels and beach front properties for rent in the area from booking your original vacation to the location. Now it`s time to take a closer look. There are two ways to approach this: Temporary or permanent housing.

Temporary ? Before you commit to putting down roots, check out temporary living spaces like apartments or condominiums for rent. Short-term housing can also come in the form of extended-stay or hotels willing to work out a price break.

Permanent ? Visit area grocery stores near the beach or vacation spot you love, and pick up a real estate booklet. Find these in racks near the entrance ways of local stores. The books give you a good idea of cost of living and available real estate agents who can help you find a home nearby.

Wait! There is that need to find a job before you plunge into the idea of relocating to an ocean view. The same stores where you found the real estate guides also tend to display local community newspapers and magazines that list job openings in the area. Check job boards online, or get really serious by contacting a placement agency in the town. Even set up some interviews while you???re there. If you didn`t come prepared for a job interview, and your wardrobe includes a swimsuit and towel, swing by a local store to pick up proper business attire to be prepared to make a good impression.

Whether you decide to just pick up and move without actually visiting that extraordinary place to live, you should always check or approximate the total cost of your move. Request affordable movers estimates from potential partner companies that can help you gauge the total expense of moving to that ideal location you seek. There are many companies that offer this service regardless of where you are moving to. A smart consumer should plan every minute detail of such relocation.

Asus Transformer Pad Infinity shows up at Best Buy, commands $600 price tag, 64GB of storage

Asus Transformer Pad Infinity shows up at Best Buy, commands $600 price tag, 64GB of memory

You didn't think ASUS pushed its souped up Transformer slate through federal approval for the sake of its health, did you? No, if Best Buy's online store has anything to say about it, the Transformer Pad Infinity's FCC excursion was preparing it for sale. It's not quite ready yet, but when it is, Best Buy will apparently be handing the slab out for $599 and change, netting buyers 64GB of storage, NVIDIA's Tegra 3 processor and a 1,920 x 1,200 10.1-inch Super IPS+ display. The listing appears to be for the WiFi-only version of the tablet, with no mention of the Snapdragon S4-equipped LTE variant that ASUS announced earlier this year. According to the product page, the unreleased hardware is currently "sold out online," but at least you know how many pennies you'll need to pinch. Check it out at the source link below.

[Thanks, Uly]

Cancer survivor allowed topless swimming at public pools

Unlike other women, 47-year-old Jodi Jaecks can now swim topless in Seattle?s public pools, thanks to a narrow exception granted by the Seattle Parks & Recreation.

Jaecks, a woman who survived a double mastectomy, was at first denied consent earlier this year to swim topless by personnel at Seattle's Medgar Evers pool.

But, Jaecks argued that she doctors had removed both of her breasts last year to treat cancer, and that wearing a bathing suit covering her chest caused her intense pain.

After winning approval to swim topless in public swimming pools, Jaecks said she would not opt for reconstructive surgery to have breasts.

Speaking on the topic, she said, "I don't see a need to fake having breasts. My ultimate goal is to change policy at beaches and pools, to increase people's awareness of cancer and the realities of the human condition.?

She also revealed that she detected the disease in a self breast examination. She said when she detected a lump in her right breast; she was felt like it was cancer. A diagnosis confirmed the disease.

Jaecks finished chemotherapy in November last year and is now completely cancer-free.

Crime ? Japan to make illegal downloading of music, videos punishable with jail terms

TOKYO ?

The government has passed a new amendment to its copyright laws, making illegal downloading punishable with jail terms for the first time.

The new law applies to those found in possession of pirated material such as music, DVDs or Blu-ray discs, and could result in fines of up to 2 million yen and sentences of up to two years in prison, according to CNET Japan.

The changes to the law bring Japan in line with the U.S., where downloading is already a criminal offense and punishments are even more severe. U.S. criminal penalties can run up to 5 years in prison or a $250,000 fine, 10 times higher than Japan.

The move has been welcomed by music industry figures, but has caused some concern among legal experts, NTV reported. The government claims the move has been introduced to protect people making music. Warner Music Japan CEO Keiichi Ishizaka has been quoted in the press as saying that he would like to see all illegal downloading eradicated.

The new amendment makes illegal downloading truly punishable for the first time. The downloading of copyrighted material without permission has been illegal in Japan since 2009, but as a civil matter, rather than a criminal one. As a result, punishments were restricted to those who uploaded pirated content. Uploaders were liable to face penalties of up to 10 years in prison or fines of as much as 10 million yen.

The bill passed the Lower House last Wednesday with little opposition, and passed the Upper House by a vote of 221 to 12, NTV reported. One of the few opponents of the bill, Takeshi Miyamoto, suggested although illegal downloading was a problem, a more effective approach to eradicating the practice would be to establish systems to efficiently remove illegal content, rather than to focus on punishment.

Meanwhile, NHK reports that some legal experts have expressed concern that the bill?s unclear wording could lead to unfair and unnecessary prosecutions. The bill says that a person who is aware that the the download or stream results in a copyright infringement can face charges. As a result, even watching a YouTube video could result in prosecution if the viewer is aware that streaming the media is illegal.

Some groups, including the Japan Federation of Bar Associations, have suggested that this may be an excessive measure in a country that still relies on the sales and rentals of physical media and has seen a relatively slow uptake of legal download services.

Upper House member Yuko Mori, another opponent of the amendment, was widely quoted in the Japanese press as saying, ?We shouldn?t risk making the general public, including young people, the subject of criminal investigations.?

The Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ) said it believes the amendments are good for the industry, and that it will strive to make the public aware of the new rules and penalties, the Nikkei reported. RIAJ chairman and CEO of Sony Music Entertainment Japan Naoki Kitagawa claimed the changes would ?reduce the spread of copyright infringement activities on the Internet.?

The new law will come into effect in October.
