Twilio Fund Alum demonstrates powerful sales automation system on stage

TwilioCon

FastCall411 was one of three Twilio Fund alumni?firms to present at the Twilio Conference on Thursday, where they also announced their second round of financing from 500 Startups, the fund created by Dave McClure. Twilio Fund is a microfund also created by 500 Startups.

?With the Twilio voice API and Salesforce.com, we?ve put the sales phone system where it needs to be: inside the CRM. FastCall411 helps sales and marketing organizations drive efficiency into their small business acquisition efforts.?

FastCall411, an intelligent sales automation and analytics company built on the Force.com platform, works with marketing and sales organizations to optimize conversion from lead generation to inside sales. As one of the first companies to use Twilio?s cloud-based telecom API integrated into Salesforce.com, FastCall411 increases sales lead conversion up to 10x and is used by the leading firms working with local SMBs, including Local.com.

In addition to the second round funding from 500 Startups, FastCall411 received an investment from noted entrepreneur and angel investor, Gerry Campbell, who said the funding is a continuation of his ongoing support of FastCall411. As former GM/SVP for AOL?s Search and Directional Media Group, Campbell knows firsthand the difficulty in selling to SMBs.

?FastCall411 is in production and revenue with meaningful strategic clients; public companies with significant inside sales forces trying to reach the SMB market,? said Campbell. ?I am impressed with the team ? they are reinventing phone sales automation inside the CRM. And their association with the Twilio team is smart and timely.?

FastCall411 is the vision of three-time entrepreneur, Richard Rosen, the company?s CEO, who saw a need to add efficiency to the very difficult task of selling to small businesses over the phone.

?I am honored that 500 Startups participated in our current funding round, along with other notable angel investors,? said Rosen, who will be among the speakers at TwilioCon where he will present FastCall411 sales automation and analytics powered by Twilio. ?With the Twilio voice API and Salesforce.com, we?ve put the sales phone system where it needs to be: inside the CRM. FastCall411 helps sales and marketing organizations drive efficiency into their small business acquisition efforts.?

About FastCall411: FastCall411 is a sales automation and analytics company that incorporates patent-pending intelligence to qualify sales leads quickly. FastCall411 integrates into existing sales funnels (i.e., website forms, AdWords) and triggers a call to each potential lead through Salesforce.com, scoring it based on any previous inbound or outbound call to that number. The leads, once they are ranked, are distributed to the client?s sales organization, making the process highly efficient. The software also contains a self-learning system to recognize phone records that have changed numbers, been disconnected or frequently do not answer a phone.

About Twilio Fund: The Twilio Fund (www.twiliofund.com) is a microfund created by 500 Startups and launched in September 2010 to provide seed capital to startups built on the Twilio cloud communications platform. Twilio Fund has made 10 investments to date in Callyo, FastCall411, KnockKnock, Magnolia Prime, Order Mapper, Proven, Qwipd, Textaurant, Voicendo, and Volta. The microfund is managed by 500 Startups founding partner, Dave McClure, an investor with experience managing platform funds. Dave previously managed the 2009 fbFUND Rev on behalf of Facebook, Accel Partners, and Founders Fund. 500 Startups is also an investor in Twilio.

Hundreds protest after two killed in east Sudan

KHARTOUM (Reuters) - Hundreds of people marched in the east of Sudan on Thursday in protest at the deaths of two people during clashes with police the previous day, residents said.

The two died in the town of Gedaref. The interior ministry said the violence had started when police tried to execute an order from local authorities to remove cattle held illegally in one area of the town.

One policeman was injured during the clashes after residents resisted the order, the ministry said.

On Thursday, hundreds of members of the same tribe as the two dead gathered in the center of Gedaref to protest, residents said.

They said the protest was directed at the police, not the government. Anger has been simmering in east Sudan which opposition activists says is underdeveloped compared to the capital Khartoum and other parts of the African country.

Real Fraud In Workers' Compensation |

Real Fraud In Workers? Compensation

There are four types of fraud in Worker?s Compensation. In the order of their actual cost they are:

Employer Fraud:

An employer misrepresents the payroll or the proper classification for the employees thereby obtaining a smaller premium. The classic case is the roofing employer, high risk-high premiums who lists his employees as stackers in storage. The roofing employee is seriously injured, and audit establishes the fraud, the insurance company balks, there is no insurance, state fund or welfare picks it up. This fraud is rampant and represents the largest amount of lost dollars. There is very little prosecution by insurance companies who want to keep collecting premiums and just do an audit and up the fees rather than prosecute. Employers also commit fraud when they do not obtain WC Insurance at all. The worker just goes without. Or the employer insists the employee lie to the employee?s health insurance and say it didn?t happen on the job to avoid premium increase. It is estimated in this recession most employers do not have workers? comp insurance. Employer fraud is rampant but not sexy or glitzy so the press does not present it to the public. A recent trend is small employer?s with workers? comp insurance list themselves as injured employees and receive benefits fraudulently for nonexistant employees.

Provider fraud:

A health care provider provides billing for non existent services or patients. The provider double bills for services. A chiropractor bills for millions of dollars over several years for services that were never rendered. An independent medical examiner for employers billed millions even though he was not licensed to practice medicine. His statement to the investigative board,?There is no such thing as a totally disabled person?, ?Most people on WC just want a free vacation? and ?most people on WC are fraudulent.? His response to an injured worker he examined to deny benefits who committed suicide after denial was to laugh and say ?Well his problems are over.? Hospitals and facilitators are under investigation for fraud. Once again this is hard to prove and does not present well for TV or the Internet so it goes unnoticed and unreported by the media thereby creating another layer of Journalistic Fraud by blaming the employees

Employer Fraud and Provider Fraud represent over 50% of Workers? Comp moneys lost to fraud. Next blog, the most and least fraud in Workers? Compensation: Insurance Companies, Workers, and the Media

Home Equity Loans Can Be Quite A Everyday Living Savior In Poor ...

If a person owns a household to his identify, Home Equity Loan can provide the option of borrowing huge sums of cash at a reduced pace of fascination. The one possibility component involved is that the home has to be kept as collateral against the financial loan. For that reason, a borrower must be totally sure that these a bank loan is actually expected and can not be postponed.

What exactly Are Home Equity Loans?

In easy phrases, household equity would be the latest value of on the house minus credit card debt or mortgage loan on it. In this kind of loans, your house is placed as collateral while using lending firm, generally a lender, and when the borrower fails to repay the mortgage as per the stipulated phrases from the contract, the loan company has the choice to seize the residence and auction it to recuperate his money. This sort of secured loans can also be utilised in moments of unfavorable credit ratings, these as inadequate credit score Loans.

Rewards And Down sides Of Household Equity Loans

The principle drawback, or conceivably the ?only? drawback, of this kind of loans is always that a person can drop his home if he fails to generate the repayments on time. So, an individual with impulsive paying routines really should steer clear of taking such a mortgage. However, such loans give various positive aspects for any smart spender.

  • House loans house loan charges are significantly lower than other sundry credit rates, as that is a secured sort of financial loan.
  • There is no restriction about the utilization of this mortgage money. One particular can utilize it to pay back any active higher education loans or university student loans, or even consolidate all their active debts into a person lump sum mortgage account, at a significantly lower rate of curiosity than ahead of, with only one payment to keep track of, each month. 1 can also use this funds for home enhancements, or to repay sudden clinical fees from the loved ones.
  • Unfavorable credit ratings house loans are available to men and women which have minimal credit score scores. How To Create Ezine | Publishing ebooks

Author: admin

Get Ezine Subscribers With the 5 Tips

Get Ezine Subscribers Tip #1 -

Make Your Content Relevant Keeps

Your Subscribers Happy And Boosts The Amount Of People

Who Will Recommend Your Newsletter To Their Friends.

One of the biggest problems I see newsletter and ezine publishers having online is

that they write about subjects no one in their market is interested in. They just write about whatever they think people want to know about without doing any of the research, which is a huge no no. Another problem is, publishers who have a market well defined don?t then write the content in their newsletters that interests their readers. There is no use having an ezine on coin collecting and running articles on stamp collecting just because you couldn?t be bothered finding the right content for your ezine. This is easily overcome. Just send out an email asking your readers what they

want to read. Also sign up for other ezines in your market and see what they are writing about.

Get Ezine Subscribers Tip #2 ?

Add More Subscription Boxes To Your Website Sounds simple enough, but few people actually do it. If you have a 100 page website, you should have 100 newsletter subscribe boxes on your website. You can integrate a subscribe box just about anywhere in a website. You could add one just before an article starts, in the middle of an article or even at the end of the article. As long as you have good content on your website, you won?t have a problem getting people to subscribe to your newsletter. An interesting way to do this for a content site is as follows. Have a look at this website and see what he does to get subscribers, it?s very

clever. http://www.associateprograms.com

Get Ezine Subscribers Tip #3 ?

Offer An Outstanding Bonus Or Gift I?ve had a problem in the past with offering freebies to get people to subscribe to your newsletter, but I also know it can work well, if done properly. Why do I have a problem with it? Well I really want subscribers to be signing up for my newsletter because they want my newsletter not because they want the Freebie im offering. the best way to offer a freebie is to create one yourself and not something you have reprint rights to with 500 other people. You want it to be unique, and you want it to be something that plugs your newsletter heavily. Do you know what makes a good bonus? Back issues of your newsletter!

Get Ezine Subscribers Tip #4 ?

Use Free Viral Ebooks To Get New Subscribers Want to get thousands of new subscribers for your ezine without spending a cent on advertising and you?ve tried all the methods above but you still want more? Viral marketing is the way to go! Writing viral ebooks that get passed around Writing viral books is nothing new, but it?s still a great way to get your newsletter noticed. there are a few methods you can use when creating viral ebooks. You can either create them as a free product, or charge for them and give people the reprint rights to the product so they in turn can give your product away while making some money in the process.

I prefer the reprint right route. The key here is though, once the momentum of the first book wears out, write another and another and another and another! All in the same method, all with reprint rights and all with your newsletter subscribe from plastered in them.

The goal really isn?t to make money from the sales of the book, it?s to get more subscribers. So again, find a group of publishers in your markets, let them know you created a New Ebook with sales letter that they can use and plug straight into their website And give them a mailing promotion to use and tell them they can have the book For free and that they can either sell the book or the book and the reprint rights to Their customers. This is easy money for them and more subscribers for you! Doing audio interviews with experts in your field also is a great idea to get more Subscribers. I?m not going to get into how to create audio products as that?s a whole other book, but interviewing experts over the phone and recording it on mp3 will get your newsletter splashed all over the Internet, especially in fields other then Internet marketing where people don?t expect to get this much quality information for free When you take marketing tactics from the Internet marketing field and apply them into other niche markets where they have never been seen before, you will get noticed more. Everything has been done in the Internet marketing field, we are all immune to even the most brilliant marketing tactics as we see them almost everyday, but other niche markets eat these things up. Creating audio interviews isn?t hard at all equipment wise and finding experts to Interview is a piece of cake. Do you know how I find experts in any field almost instantly? Well most FAQ pages at FAQS.Org/faq/ have who its written by and an email address for them. These guys are obviously knowledgeable in their fields, and they would make great experts to interview. Tell them you want to interview them because you?ve read information they?ve written and it was great and you think your subscribers would appreciate the information. Most will do this without charging you a cent if you are outside the marketing field, they will just get a thrill out of being interviewed. Once you have these interviews, tell all the publishers you?ve been in contact with recently that you have this great set of mp3?s just completed and you want to offer them for free to their lists. Setup a section on your website with the download link to these mp3?s and also put a subscribe form near them for your newsletter and you will be surprised how

many people will sign up AFTER they listen to your mp3s. Don?t make is so these

people have to sign up for your newsletter before they get the mp3s.

Get Ezine Subscribers Tip #5 ?

Use Pop Up Windows Pop up windows are still effective ways to get subscribers, especially in niche markets. Creating popups on your website is as easy as pie. There are however a few different type of popup windows you can use. The pop up window on exit, which pops up after you leave a website and the popup window on entry which obviously pops up when you first go to a website. I prefer the exit popup. So when someone leaves a page on your website they get a popup window asking them to subscribe to your newsletter. This can get annoying so what you want to do is use a popup that allows you to

tell if a persons already seen your popup before so it won?t keep showing.

You can find these sort of popup scripts at?..

http://www.nowsell.com/pop-ups/exit-popup-scripts.html

Or if you want a piece of software to do it for you, check out

http://www.dynamic-popup-generator.com/gindex.htm

Hopefully these 5 ?Get Ezine Subscribers Tips? Will get your ezine on the fast track to success

Probe into deadly crash focuses on wayward part

The death toll rose to nine Saturday in an air race crash in Reno as investigators determined that several spectators were killed on impact as the 1940s-model plane appeared to lose a piece of its tail before slamming like a missile into a crowded tarmac.

Moments earlier, thousands had arched their necks skyward and watched the planes speed by just a few hundred feet off the ground before some noticed a strange gurgling engine noise from above. Seconds later, the P-51 Mustang dubbed the Galloping Ghost pitched oddly upward, twirled and took an immediate nosedive into a section of white box seats.

Story: Death toll rises in Reno air show crash

The plane, flown by a 74-year-old veteran racer and Hollywood stunt pilot, disintegrated in a ball of dust, debris and bodies as screams of "Oh my God!" spread through the crowd.

National Transportation Safety Board officials were on the scene Saturday to determine what caused Jimmy Leeward to lose control of the plane, and they were looking at amateur video clips that appeared to show a small piece of the aircraft falling to the ground before the crash. Witnesses who looked at photos of the part said it appeared to be an "elevator trim tab," which helps pilots keep control of the aircraft.

Video apparently taken from the stands and posted on YouTube showed a plane crashing nose-down at the show after several other planes raced by in the air.

Reno police also provided a GPS mapping system to help investigators recreate the crash scene.

Investigators said they also recovered part of the tail section, where the tab is located.

Story: WWII-era plane crashes at W.Va. air show

A tour near the site offered to journalists Saturday evening revealed debris spread in a fan-shape over more than an acre around a crater roughly 3 feet deep and as much as 8 feet across. Based on the crater's location, it appears the P-51 Mustang went straight down in the first few rows of VIP box seats, or about 65 feet in front of the leading edge of the grandstand.

Yellow crime tape surrounded the scene and spectator seats remained askew.

Among the dead were the pilot and eight spectators. Officials said 69 people were treated at hospitals, including 36 who have been released and 31 who remain there. Nine were in critical condition late Saturday.

Among the dead identified by the Washoe County, Nev., medical examiner was spectator Greg Morcom, 47, of Washington state. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, said TV station KOMO of Seattle.

Among other spectators Michael Wogan, 22, of Phoenix, perished at the scene and his father, Bill Wogan, lost his right eye, some fingers on his right hand, suffered over 100 fractures to his face, and remains in critical condition at a Reno hospital, according the The Arizona Republic.

The names of the other seven fatalities were not released.

Slideshow: Plane crashes at Reno air show (on this page)

Doctors who treated the injured said it was among the most severe situations they had ever seen because of the large number of people, including at least two children younger than 18 who are not among those in critical condition.

Injuries included major head injuries, facial trauma and limb injuries, including amputations, said Dr. Myron Gomes, chief trauma surgeon at Renown Regional Medical Center.

Could have been worse
Despite the large number of dead and injured, witnesses and people familiar with the race say the toll could have been much worse had the plane gone down in the larger crowd area of the stands. The plane crashed in a section of box seats that was located in front of the grandstand area where most people sat.

Some credit the pilot with preventing the crash from being far more deadly by avoiding the grandstand section with a last-minute climb, although it's impossible at this point to know his thinking as he was confronted with the disaster and had just seconds to respond.

Video: Reno crash witness: 'Plane was headed right for us'

Witnesses described a horrible scene after the plane struck the crowd and sent up a brown cloud of dust billowing in the wind. When it cleared moments later, motionless bodies lay strewn across the ground, some clumped together, while others stumbled around bloodied and shocked.

Ambulances rushed to the scene, and officials said fans did an amazing job in tending to the injured. Just that morning, the 25 emergency workers at the air show had done a drill for such a large-scale emergency like this.

The crash marked the first time spectators had been killed since the races began 47 years ago in Reno. Twenty pilots including Leeward have died in that time, race officials said.

It is the only air race of its kind in the United States. Planes at the yearly event fly wingtip-to-wingtip as low as 50 feet off the ground at speeds sometimes surpassing 500 mph. Pilots follow an oval path around pylons, with distances and speeds depending on the class of aircraft.

The disaster prompted renewed calls for race organizers to consider ending the event because of the dangers. Officials said they would look at everything as they work to understand what happened.

Another crash, on Saturday, came at an airshow in Martinsburg, West Virginia, when post-World War II plane, a T-28, crashed and burst into flames. The pilot was killed.

In Reno, the Mustang that disintegrated into the crowd had minor crashes almost exactly 40 years ago after its engine failed. According to two websites that track P-51s that are still flying, it made a belly landing away from the Reno airport. The NTSB report on the Sept. 18, 1970, incident says the engine failed during an air race and it crash landed short of the runway.

Arizona Schools Math Criteria - Online Degree Education

Arizona Schools Math Criteria ? Is There Exactly how
All says crossways the usa require standards that has to be met in different things by specific grades, in particular in reading and math concepts. End of year testing becomes necessary for specific grades to guarantee schools and students usually are meeting these standards.

The concern is states, including the Say of arizona schools, are trying to show everything at once to be healthy to students, with instructors losing the capacity to instruct the important math concepts completely. Otherwise, students are learning just a tiny about everything (just adequate to pass say tests) however is not enough to actually used in the real world.

Many educators in your Arizona schools are concerned that they?re being forced to show for testing, rather than real in-depth learning that is certainly needed in higher degrees and college.

For instance, the Arizona schools require second graders to be aware of 77 math concepts through the end of that mark. That is a massive amount of concepts, and instructors are given no guidance through the Arizona schools on which concepts are the key. That means that similar importance is given to any or all, and all must become sufficiently taught. In order to start this, Arizona schools would ought to create mandatory day-by-day lessons plans, which they never have done.

The National Council with Instructors of Mathematics might be a highly influential organization, whose suggestions are as well as most educators. Nearly many math textbooks for kindergarten by eighth grade reference that council, also aligning utilizing recommendations.

In a article released in September, the council will follow many Arizona schools educators which the say is trying to pay for too much within yearly, noting that some says require more.

Council Executive Director peer Rubillo points out that lots of mandatory math concepts taught means a small amount of in-depth learning by the particular students. They might have the capacity to pass a test towards the end of the year, however it is doubtful that numerous students will carry that concepts into higher learning with no repetition and in-depth tuition required. Too many concepts to show leaves no time with regard to in-depth instruction.

The council also published new suggestions for curriculum points of interest. The suggestions narrow this focus to just about three math concepts at each single grade level with all instruction for each grade built around these people. The council hopes says will exploit a discussion on this matter and think about their advice.

The Arizona schools start revision with their math standards next spring and therefore are considering the council?s advice, according to Mary Knuck, say director of standards for that Arizona schools. If your Arizona schools follow this council?s recommendations, it means a major overhaul in their current standards and screening methods.

The real challenge pertaining to Arizona schools instructors currently just isn?t the vast array of standards that have to be taught; however, the important challenge is to coach math for both real-world applications and standard examining. It must make sense inside the real world, or it truly is wasted. Yet, Arizona schools students must be capable of have instant recall as a way to answer say test queries correctly. Hopefully, the council as well as Arizona schools can jointly make more sense belonging to the crucial math standards with the Arizona schools.

A Shopaholic's Guide to Shopping Online

It?s a 21st Century world out there. We do everything we do is so different then our parent?s and our kids are growing up in a technological age where convenience is king. Our grandparent?s lifestyle is arguably obsolete.

From our televisions to our telephones, the world is at our fingertips. The way we shop has evolved, considerably. Life is literally just outside our keyboard and monitor, never mind our front door. Access is instant in this ?you think it, we?ve built it? society we?ve created for ourselves.

Still, there are many things I like to do in person and shopping is definitely one of them. Racks of gorgeous clothes you can touch and see definitely make for a more satisfying experience then a cold hard monitor.

There are times though, where I let my fingers do the walking. 85% of my holiday gift shopping is done online & I have to say that I?m getting more for my money this way!

The rush of the bargain is just as satisfying and the convenience is nonpareil. I?m saving gas and most important I?m saving myself the stress of holiday traffic, parking & lines.

There have been lessons learned, tips and tricks I?ve picked up over the years and I?m going to share them with you, now?

Do You?re Homework

This rule also goes for in-store shopping, before you go you should know:

What you are looking for
How much do you expect to pay for it
When you are going to need it

Having this knowledge and keeping your focus on the answers will go a long way to curbing excessive spending! I think it was GI Joe who said ?Knowing is half the battle? and was he ever wrong?

Read Reviews

There is a lot more to consider when making a purchases online. Things like shipping time, location, reputation are all contributing factors, which can make the difference between a great shopping experience and a nightmare.

So before you buy, read through the reviews, see what other people are saying. Were they happy with the product? Was it true to advertisement? Did it ship in a timely manner? If it had to be returned was that easy to do?

If the majority of comments are overwhelmingly ?yes? to these questions then you will more than likely have a pleasant experience too. Reading through reviews has really helped me develop my online shopping savvy.

Also, don?t be bashful, write a review in turn & be helpful to the next person coming into that site for a purchase!

Shop Who You Know

These days almost every major retailer, department store and boutique has an online store too. If you already trust a brand then you know what you?re getting and purchasing via their online outlets will work well for you.

They almost always offer free shipping on purchases over a certain amount & if you are unhappy with the product you can go in-person to return rather then spending money to ship it back to the warehouse!

Another bonus?.in-store pick up, some retailers will let you purchase online & pick it up in the store, eliminating shipping costs all together!

Email Subscriptions

I have an email address dedicated to my shopping lifestyle. I use it to subscribe to emails from my favorite retailers like, Victoria?s Secret, Amazon, elf cosmetics and The Children?s Place among many, many others.

They are always sending me coupons, discounts & deals I can use online or in-store. The separate email address ensures that my personal inbox is not being inundated with ?junk mail? and when I am ready to do major shopping I check the email before I go.

I managed discounts up to 40% on purchases for back to school clothes for the kids! In fact, I haven?t paid full price for anything in forever!

I think the most important thing to remember is keep an open mind and enter this 21st century world with eyes wide open because an educated consumer is a responsible shopper & responsible shopping is what it?s all about IntheClotheset!

(AP) ? Yahoo Inc. fired Carol Bartz as CEO Tuesday after more than 2? years of financial lethargy that had convinced investors that she wouldn't be able to steer the Internet company to a long-promised turnaround.

To fill the void, Yahoo's board named Tim Morse, its chief financial officer, as interim CEO. Bartz lured Morse away from computer chip maker Altera Corp. two years ago to help her cuts costs. Yahoo, based in Sunnyvale, Calif., said it is looking for a permanent replacement.

The shake-up was initially reported by the All Things D technology blog.

Bartz's austerity campaign has helped boost Yahoo's earnings, but the company didn't increase its revenue under her leadership at a time when the Internet ad market has been growing.

Bartz's inability to snap Yahoo's financial funk, along with recent setbacks in an online search partnership with Microsoft Corp. and an investment in Chinese Internet giant Alibaba Group, proved to be her downfall.

Yahoo has now replaced three CEOs in a little over four years. During that time, Yahoo has been losing ground in the Internet ad race to online search leader Google Inc. and Facebook even though its website remains among the world's most popular. Her ouster comes with 16 months left on a four-year contract that she signed in January 2009.

Known for her no-nonsense leadership and sometimes gruff language, Bartz arrived at Yahoo as a respected Silicon Valley executive who had won praise for turning around business software maker Autodesk Inc. But she had no previous experience in Internet advertising, the main way that Yahoo makes money.

That void on her resume immediately raised questions whether she was qualified for the job, and those doubts only escalated as Yahoo's revenue continued to sag.

At first, Bartz blamed bad timing; she started the job during some of the bleakest months of the Great Recession. Later, she would say that she inherited such as mess from her two predecessors, Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang and former movie studio boss Terry Semel, that it would take time to get Yahoo back on the right track.

At one point, she even compared her challenge to those that faced Steve Jobs when he returned to Apple Inc. as CEO in 1997.

Unlike Jobs, Bartz, 63, never was able to articulate a strategy to win over investors.

"She focused on plugging holes in the ship instead of turning it around," said Gartner Inc. analyst Ray Valdes.

The disappointing performance was reflected in Yahoo's stock price, which closed at $12.91. That's 81 cents, or 7 percent, higher than where Yahoo shares stood when Bartz was hired as CEO. During the same period, Google's stock price has risen by more than $200, or 66 percent.

Bartz never hit any of the price targets that the board set for her when she was hired, a shortfall that meant none of the 5 million stock options that she received upon signing her contract ever vested.

Investors seemed happy to see Bartz go. Yahoo shares gained 81 cents, or more than 6 percent, in extended trading late Tuesday.

Although Bartz's exit as CEO came suddenly, her departure isn't a shock. The pressure to replace her grew earlier this year after Bartz acknowledged Yahoo's search partnership with Microsoft wasn't' producing as much revenue as the companies anticipated. Then, in May, Yahoo stunned investors by disclosing that Alibaba had spun off an online payment service in a move that threatened to diminish the value of Yahoo's investment in the Chinese company.

Alipay in July agreed to a complex settlement that could eventually be worth more than $1 billion to Yahoo, but there were too many uncertainties in the deal to placate shareholders.

Yahoo Chairman Roy Bostock had steadfastly stood behind Bartz whenever she was attacked by investors or analysts. In a Tuesday statement, Bostock thanked Bartz for "her service to Yahoo during a critical time of transition in the company's history" without providing an explanation for why the board decided to replace her.

BGC partners analyst Colin Gillis said Yahoo's board "has got to look in the mirror here."

"Swapping the CEO without swapping the (board) chair doesn't solve your problem," he said. "The person that hired Carol to begin with deserves to share the culpability."

With its stock sagging and its management in limbo, Yahoo could be more vulnerable to a takeover attempt by a private equity group or another opportunistic bidder attracted to what remains one of the Internet's best-known brands. Microsoft offered to buy Yahoo for $47.5 billion, or $33 per share, in 2008 only to be rebuffed.

If you're looking to send in an inquiry of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.

"My son (five years old) has commandeered my wife's laptop for his game-playing pleasure lately, and it's been driving her batty. He basically only plays the games she does (Plants vs. Zombies, Zuma, etc.). So far he's able to find the games he wants (by their icons) and open them without issues using Windows 7, but now that I'm looking into getting him his own basic computer I'm beginning to wonder if there isn't something more kid-friendly out there. I've had cursory experience with OS X and Linux (Ubuntu), and I'll be doing all the installing and setup myself. Any thoughts from parents? Thanks!"

Kids and computers. Now that's a recipe for awesomeness. Any new(ish) parents out there have any experience on their kids loving / hating a certain OS? Feel free to drop your advice in comments below -- let's keep it intelligent, okay?

Choosing Energy Efficient Light Fixtures ? Energy

Finding the best combination of light bulbs and energy saving fixtures are important considerations when designing and building today?s modern homes. Additionally, home sellers understand that energy efficient homes are more desirable and more likely to sell at a higher price than a comparable home without energy saving fixtures. When considering which home improvements are likely to result in the greater return, installing energy efficient light bulbs is an important consideration.

Replacing old incandescent lighting with compact fluorescent lighting is an easy way to save money and energy, second only to improving the quality of a home?s insulation, heating and cooling systems. The two most familiar types of energy saving lighting are old-style fluorescent tubes and the newer, compact fluorescent light bulbs, or CFLs. CFLs have become far more affordable and are in greater demand than the old tube-style light bulbs. Older fluorescent light tubes are still being used for energy savings in buildings that require lots of direct overhead lighting.

Fluorescent lights have long been known for their energy efficiency, although they remain unpopular for the color quality of their light. Fortunately for today?s homeowners, energy saving compact fluorescent bulbs are available in many different sizes, shapes and styles. Fluorescent light fixtures are can be used in any location where a lot of light is needed, such as kitchen lighting, under cabinet lighting, bathroom ceiling lighting and commercial lighting conditions. As a result of advances if compact fluorescent lighting and lighting fixtures, CFL bulbs have gained acceptance in home and offices everywhere.

Energy saving fluorescent lights are now available in a wide range of spectrum and lumens that can fulfill the needs of any lighting situation. CFL bulbs that produce full spectrum fluorescent lighting are gaining in popularity in country kitchens, offices and many other applications where natural lighting is preferred. Full spectrum fluorescent lights are also available for growing indoor plants and gardens.

Compact fluorescent lights are designed to replace the traditional incandescent light bulb, and are the easiest way to improve the energy efficiency of a home, office, or commercial lighting applications. Compact fluorescents have evolved in size and shape becoming even more compact while providing an acceptable range of lighting with minimal energy consumption. Unlike incandescent light bulbs, fluorescent light bulbs cannot be used with a dimmer control, which can be an issue in some interior design cases.

CFL Bulbs have gone through a series of technological advances that have enhanced their design and function over older tube-type models. New compact fluorescent feature smaller sizes, longer lives, instant-on and the same energy efficiency as earlier models. This makes them a good match for most lighting fixtures in a multitude of decorative styles. Naturally, CFL bulbs cost more at first, but buying incentives are available to help reduce the initial cost of replacing incandescents with CFLs. With consumers and business owners everywhere searching for ways to cut costs, installing CFL bulbs now will result in saving as much as 30% in energy costs over the long term

Compact fluorescent light bulbs are destined to advance in energy savings technology, efficiency, and design. Whether decorating the home or office, compact fluorescent lighting and fixtures are the best and most economical choice for every lighting situation. Other factors that should be taken into account when determining the right type of lighting fixture include the porportion of the room, its function and decor, the reflectivity of the surfaces being illuminated, and the type and? amount of work being performed at a particular location.

These articles can be very inspiring, hope the practical knowledge was useful. Thanks a lot for reading.

Question by Robyn: How much energy does a plug-in radiator use?
My bedroom upstairs is a converted attic. No heat, no air. So, I use a plug-in radiator to heat the space. It gets toasty in about 2 hours?but how much energy is it using? Are plug-in radiators energy hogs?

Best answer:

Answer by richard p
yes, they are quite energy inefficient. The amount of power usage is required by law to be affixed to the unit, usually expressed in wattage. Electric heat is not as efficient as most other types of home heating. Really, if you can, put on extra layers of clothing. The difference in your electric bill will allow you to buy two or three new sweaters per year.

FreshStay.com Reaches 5000 Members - Article Details

FreshStay.com now has more than 5,000 reasons for hotels to go smoke-free. With the addition of nearly 200 new hotels, including numerous Comfort Suites hotels, FreshStay.com now has more than 5,000 properties that are committed to being 100% non-smoking.

?Reaching 5,000 hotel partners is a milestone that we are not only proud of, but it speaks to the growing commitment throughout the hospitality industry to the health and comfort for Frequent Breathers everywhere,? says Ray Burger, Founder of FreshStay.com. ?Eliminating smoking isn?t just a trend, or isolated in a few geographic regions anymore. It?s proven to improve guest satisfaction and increase profitability.?

?We truly believe that it should be standard operating procedure for all hotels, motels, inns, and B&Bs everywhere.?

As the world's leading online directory of smoke-free hotels, FreshStay.com now has partners in all 50 states, Canada and around the globe.

Among those properties are more than 600 Comfort Suites hotels within the U.S.

?The Comfort Suites brand made the decision to go smoke free in 2007,? says Christina Williamson, senior director of brand planning and management for the Comfort brand family. ?We knew that providing a healthy, smoke-free environment to our guests and our employees just made good business sense. Comfort Suites is focused on providing a relaxed and renewing healthy environment that enables guests to leave hotels feeling refreshed, so it was also a strong fit with our brand promise.?

?Today we have more than 640 domestic Comfort Suites hotels and all are 100% smoke free.?

?We appreciate the support of this important lodging initiative that Choice Hotels and Comfort Suites properties provide to guests that prefer Better Indoor Air Quality when they travel,? says Burger.

Changing Times

For each of FreshStay?s 5,000 partners, each has its own unique reasons for extinguishing smoking. Many are reaching out to their increasingly health conscious guests. Some are just tired of cleaning up the smoke, ash, and burn marks that come from allowing smoking. Others have found that isolating smoking rooms or smoking floors is simply an exercise in futility.

Then there are those who are tired of turning away paying guests because the only rooms left to book are the smoking rooms.

?More and more midscale guests are demanding a cleaner, fresher stay and healthy accommodations.? The number of guests requesting smoke-free accommodations has risen significantly in the past decade,? says Williamson. ?We saw the opportunity to meet our guests? needs.? At Comfort Suites hotels, we have larger than average guest rooms that are 100% smoke-free so guests can truly experience a ton of ?Breathing Room? when they stay with us.?

Since the site launched in 2006, FreshStay.com has not only seen its roster grow, but it has implemented numerous upgrades, making it easier for socially responsible travelers to find and book the perfect property.

Listings are broken down by state and by city, with an integrated booking option booking your next stay is as easy as a few clicks of the mouse.

In that time, there has also been a growing awareness on the effects of second-hand smoke, and a movement amongst numerous states and cities to ban smoking indoors.

?An increasing number of state laws are restricting smoking in hotels and other public places, so it?s not just a concern for hotel guests,? says Williamson. ?People have become more sensitive to the smell of smoke, so for Comfort Suites hotels, we found that the best thing to do was to go entirely smoke-free, rather than allowing some rooms within the hotel to remain smoking rooms.??

?We had strong data to support the decision to go smoke-free, but there was some apprehension about turning away any customers,? she adds. ?In the end, the program has turned out to be a great success.? The great majority of customers have a strong preference for a smoke-free room.? Knowing that all our rooms at Comfort Suites hotels are 100% smoke free has actually created more loyal guests for the Comfort Suites brand.?
??
Burger says that FreshStay.com will continue to evolve beyond 5,000 members. Not only will FreshStay.com continue to reach out to both hotels and travelers looking to embrace the smoke-free experience, but FreshStay.com will look to include other indoor air quality enhancements. Many FreshStay members have incorporated clean rooms that don?t just eliminate smoking, but also filter out allergens for the most fresh-smelling, restful room possible.

Williamson agrees this is where the hospitality industry is headed.

?People need to be able to relax and sleep peacefully in their hotel rooms, and air quality has a significant impact on their ability to do so,? she says. ?Beyond smoke-free rooms, there is an increasing trend to address other sensitivities and allergies in our rooms.? We continue to look for opportunities to make our guest more comfortable in this way.?

Reaching New Guests
Williamson mentions that one of the key guest targets at Comfort Suites hotels is the business traveler.? Research shows that the business traveler is particularly interested in fitness and health.? In addition to more traditional amenities such as a fitness center and ergonomic chairs, Comfort Suites finds that business travelers really appreciate a smoke-free hotel experience.

Another new member of FreshStay.com, Matt W. Markopoulos of the South Beach Biloxi Hotel & Suites in Biloxi, Miss., says that smoke-free hotels reach across a broad spectrum of guests.

?Being smoke-free is better for overall air quality and benefits everyone,? he says. ?Guests with allergies know they can count entering a fresh room without worrying about the lingering scent of smoke from past guests or guests across the hall?

?If a non-smoker is placed into a smoking room, that creates an unpleasant atmosphere, it?s an impression that could be irreversible in the eyes, and nose, of your guests.?

Opened in October of 2010 with 100 guest rooms on the Gulf Coast, the South Beach Biloxi is a unique ultra-luxury hotel with suites ranging in size from 450 square feet to 1,950 square feet!

?We find partnering with FreshStay.com is a unique differentiator to us, reaching out to an audience that is looking for a smoke-free experience,? Markopoulos says.

Williamson agrees.

?Making the decision to go smoke-free has sustained Comfort Suites as a bold and innovative hotel brand.? Comfort Suites guests appreciate the fact that they can visit any of our hotels and experience a healthy, smoke-free environment,? she says. ?Being a part of FreshStay helps us get that message out and target the right kind of guests we are looking for.?
