Church Burglar Named

Tips from the public have helped Jamestown police charge a man they say is involved in recent burglaries from two Jamestown churches.

John A. Bish, 45, was charged with two counts of third-degree burglary, one count of fourth-degree grand larceny and one count of petit larceny for his involvement in the burglaries at the Greek Orthodox Church on Francis Street and the Bethel Lutheran Church on West Third Street in Jamestown on March 4.

Bish allegedly entered the Bethel Lutheran Church during Sunday morning services and took a laptop computer and a digital camera. He was also believed to have taken a wallet from a parishioner's purse at the Greek Orthodox Church later that day.

Investigators were able to identify Bish after receiving multiple calls and tips from citizens and other law enforcement officials from Erie County who had recognized Bish from surveillance footage in the media.

"We didn't have any idea, so we reached out to the media," said Capt. Robert Samuelson of the Jamestown Police Department. "Without initial tips, this would have been a very difficult case to solve."

According to Samuelson, tips led investigators to an acquaintance in town with whom Bish was staying. They then spoke with that person about the incident.

"We are very glad from an investigative standpoint that he is in custody and off the streets," said Samuelson.

Bish was arraigned in the Chautauqua County Court on Thursday and was taken to the Chautauqua County Jail in lieu of $100,000 cash bail or $200,000 property bond.
