Prosecutors told a British court Tuesday that three men charged with plotting a major suicide-bomb attack posed as solicitors for an Islamic charity to raise money for the plan, The Guardian writes.
Irfan Naseer, Irfan Khalid, and Ashik Ali collected more than $19,000 going door-to-door in the cities of Birmingham and Leicester during Ramadan last year, wearing T-shirts and other gear identifying them as volunteer fundraisers for humanitarian group Muslim Aid, authorities said.
The suspects allegedly gave about a fifth of the money to charity and kept the rest to pay for a planned series of bombings. Prosecutors said two of the men had recently returned from a training camp in Waziristan, an area of Pakistan where the Taliban and al-Qaida are strong.
The three men are standing trial on charges of engaging in conduct in preparation of terrorist acts, which they deny.
