Design Team Unveils Skatepark Plans | The Back Bay Sun

The team behind the Charles River Skatepark unveiled the latest plans for the $2.5 million skateboarding facility Wednesday at the Boston Public Library.

The proposed 40,000 square-foot skatepark will be located beneath the ramps of the Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge at the North Point Park in East Cambridge. The facility, which will be the largest of its kind in New England, will be available free of charge to skateboarders, inline skaters and BMX bicyclists. Construction is slated to begin next year.

The project is a collaboration between the Cambridge-based nonprofit Charles River Conservancy (CRC) and the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR). Action Sports Design (ASD)/Santec of California will oversee the skatepark?s design.

?ASD will work to maximize opportunities to incorporate ?green? elements into the design and construction of the skatepark, including systems that promote the natural treatment of stormwater runoff, recycled and reclaimed building materials and a construction-phase waste management and recycling plan,? according to the CRC Web site.

The CRC has also introduced Jason Lederer as its new skateboard project manager. The DCR and Charles River Conservancy struck a deal to build the skatepark in July after a more than a decade of planning efforts and false starts.
