UK demands data on breast implant ruptures (AP)

LONDON ? Britain's health secretary has demanded data on ruptures of French-made PIP breast implants by the end of week from private clinics.

Andrew Lansley said Wednesday that officials don't have good data on numbers of failures of the implants in British patients.

In an interview with the BBC, Lansley said the government hopes to determine the rate of failure of the PIP implants compared to other products.

The implants made by the now-defunct French company Poly Implant Prothese were banned last year in countries around the world after more than 1,000 women suffered ruptures.

Lansley said that so far there is no evidence of a heightened risk of cancer associated with ruptured PIP implants.
