More Awareness Needed on Colon Cancer Prevention with High-Fiber Diet (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | While growing up my mother encouraged us to stop eating white bread and sugar-coated cereals. Instead we ate whole grain breads and cereal high in fiber and bran. One of my favorites still is Raisin Bran cereal. My maternal grandmother died of colon cancer, so maybe it was one of many reasons my mother wanted us to eat healthier.

Apparently she had read a book that made her turn around our diet. Now a recent study that appears in the Friday online issue of British Medical Journal finds that even eating the lowest level of fibers, such as cereal and whole grains, was associated with a reduced risk of colorectal cancer.

Sometimes I wondered if my mother was concerned if colon cancer was hereditary since my grandmother died from it. As it turns out it is less likely for this cancer to be inherited from family to family . That is good news, but the mere fact my grandmother died from it is not to ever be ignored. Even though fruits and vegetables also contain fibers the research that was based on 25 analyzed studies in BMJ stated evidence was weaker . However, it is certainly much healthier to eat fruits and vegetables than fast foods and junk food. To this day I cannot eat any white bread. I much prefer whole grain breads as it is much tastier, not to mention healthier too.

Now with these recent findings on eating a high-fiber diet to reduce the risk of colon cancer, which is the third most common cancer, a lot more awareness needs to be brought out. I've noticed more television commercials stating the benefits of whole grain breads such as Subway sandwiches. I always feel better eating a high-fiber diet. When I have eaten white bread or sugary cereal I tend to feel bloated, plus my sugar level would sometimes get low. You are what you eat. Why not eat a diet filled with whole grains and cereal.
