Scientists develop rewritable digital storage built into DNA; biological binary exists

We've seen DNA flirt with computing and storage before, but a biological system that can record digital data? That's something different. Stanford researchers used natural enzymes to create rewritable data storage built directly into living cells' DNA. The enzymes can flip DNA sequences back and forth, enabling a programmable, binary-like system where the DNA section is a zero if it points in a particular direction and a one if it points the other way. (Color coding indicates which way a section of genetic code is facing.) The so-called recombinase addressable data (RAD) module can store one bit of information without consuming any power, and in addition to letting scientists switch DNA sequences, it allows them to count how many times a given cell has doubled. That capability could come in handy for studying how cancer spreads, and could even give scientists the ability to "turn off" affected cells. The next step for the scientists will be upping the storage capacity to a byte, which will reportedly take a good ten years. Horse Riding Facts For The Newbie

I consider myself blessed, because I have been riding horses since I was a little girl and I now own my own horses. It is difficult for me to imagine living without them. They are like children: they make me laugh and cry, exult and rage, cheer and sulk. They get my love and they give me theirs. There is nothing so therapeutic after a hard day?s work as taking your horse out for a ride. The bond between my horses and I is deep, indeed.

For all the fact that horses are an inalienable part of my life, I am aware that many people are intimidated by horses and horse riding. To them, horses are huge animals of unknown danger and the thought of actually getting on top of a horse is frightening, to say the least.

If you are among those people who find horses scary, I understand that. You are simply reacting to horses in tune with whatever conditioning you have received in life. I would suggest, though, that you search for a horse that is undoubtedly placid and try out horse riding just a couple of times. You are almost surely going to end up changing your whole attitude.

The process of mastering horse riding starts long before you clamber into the saddle for the first time. As far as I am concerned, you start with the fundamentals ? and the fundamentals mean getting yourself a sound education on horses and their psychologies. You will make a good horse person only when you are very knowledgeable about horses.

Humans tend to humanize their pets, and that means horses, too. People are apt to assume that their pets are capable of the same reasoning and emotions as they are. This is probably one of the biggest initial mistakes novice horse riders make with their horses, and it can be a disaster in waiting.

Horses do not have human traits. They have equine traits. They are not capable of thinking, seeing, smelling, hearing or speaking like humans. As someone who wishes to master horse riding, this is the first major concept you have to understand very clearly. In this understanding lies the future security of you and your horse, which will have a direct bearing on the success of your riding efforts.

Because the horse is a herd animal, it has herd instincts: it is programmed to react, not act. You must have seen lots of scenes on television of herd animals like zebras and deer react to the presence of a predator. Horses are the same. This is not to discourage you from trying out horse riding, it is to caution you to reach out to your horse at its level, without expecting it to rise to yours. You need to think like a horse to achieve total rapport with your horse, and you need total rapport to become an accomplished master of horse riding techniques. The learning curve becomes very easy once the empathy is there.

Horse riding is great fun and a very fulfilling sport, but it needs to be approached right, or it will end badly.

Those who do make their preparations right give up after some attempts. Their experiences are not very good because their preparation was not very good. They took tumbles, wrenched or sprained some part of their body because they were not in tune with their horses. If you allow the experiences of people like this to throw you off horse riding, you are denying yourself a great deal of fun in life. It is not the horse that is at fault generally when mishaps occur, it is the rider, and once you realize that and do something about it, you are all set to become a master horse rider.

I think we?ve all seen the Top Gear Challenge where the blokes buy cars for less than ?100 but I can?t seem to find anything in the Boston/Seacoast of NH that is remotely close to this kind of money in fully usable condition.? I?m constantly trolling craigslist, local newspapers and side roads.? Where is the best place to look for solid and very inexpensive beaters and what should I expect in terms of price and condition?? I am fully aware that rust will be an issue where I live.

My second question is perhaps more difficult to answer.? I?ve read most of Mr. Baruth?s?Trackday?Diaries pieces and would like to get into competitive racing/track time in the near future.? I am a great proponent of training and licensing but don?t currently?have the funds to drop g?s on Skip Barber track days.? I am not a ?fan? of racing so I don?t know what types of events clubs like SCCA?offer or the cost of entrance.? My daily driver is an 2008 Civic Si Sedan with 46k and stock Michelin Pilot HX?MXM4?all-season rubber.? I am open to using this car for some track time but I want to do all that I can to prevent catastrophic failures from occurring and minimize?my risk.? I know that this car may not be?the best for such duties but I can?t see how it could be the worst.? I want to properly learn track etiquette and safety procedures?but am not sure what modifications, training and equipment I would need to be?successful.? Are the barriers of entry simply too high for a broke college kid or is participation in the racing scene actually possible?? Thanks for any help you may provide.

Your first question is easy to answer: you covered almost all of the?bases.? The only thing left is to go on the offensive, via?posting want ads. Start on?Craigslist?with a?want ad for a cheap car.??Find any corkboard?for community postings in college, grocery stores, churches, community centers,?etc and post a similar message.???Beggars can?t be?choosers, but they also can?t wait around for the right whip to show up.? Make it happen, and write?it just as well as this letter to me.

Question two:? there are weekend driving courses around the country, but I couldn?t google something relevant for you.? Fear not, I?m just an ignorant Texan, I am sure you can find a place where nearby tracks are rented?for weekend driving schools, SCCA?club events, Import tuner clubs, etc.? The easiest way to get in the action is to join something like the aforementioned?SCCA. You?know, to get in the network and start autocrossing.

Most importantly, this form of racing is so much cheaper than anything else out there.

Though I think the last two compositions on the album are rather spoiled by the inclusion of vocals, We'll Talk About It Later is still a very confident and capable follow-up to Elastic Rock, with Nucleus continuing to practice their own distinctive style of fusion. Debate over whether or not they had any influence in their early material from In a Silent Way or Bitch's Brew aside, by this point they're very much ploughing their own furrow, developing a style of jazz-rock which would end up having a glancing influence on late-phase Canterbury bands such as Matching Mole, Hatfield and the North, National Health and, of course, the later Soft Machine albums.

The Times Colonist published an article today profiling the Herway Home program in Victoria, BC (Vulnerable mothers and babies to get vital help, May 20, 2012).

HerWay Home is a ?one-stop access? program for women in the perinatal period who use substances. After four years of planning by over 30 government and community agencies, advocates and experts, HerWay Home will be opening its doors in later summer/early fall of 2012. Services will include prenatal care, a drop-in centre, short-term stabilization housing, drug and alcohol counselling, and parenting support.
