A Shopaholic's Guide to Shopping Online

It?s a 21st Century world out there. We do everything we do is so different then our parent?s and our kids are growing up in a technological age where convenience is king. Our grandparent?s lifestyle is arguably obsolete.

From our televisions to our telephones, the world is at our fingertips. The way we shop has evolved, considerably. Life is literally just outside our keyboard and monitor, never mind our front door. Access is instant in this ?you think it, we?ve built it? society we?ve created for ourselves.

Still, there are many things I like to do in person and shopping is definitely one of them. Racks of gorgeous clothes you can touch and see definitely make for a more satisfying experience then a cold hard monitor.

There are times though, where I let my fingers do the walking. 85% of my holiday gift shopping is done online & I have to say that I?m getting more for my money this way!

The rush of the bargain is just as satisfying and the convenience is nonpareil. I?m saving gas and most important I?m saving myself the stress of holiday traffic, parking & lines.

There have been lessons learned, tips and tricks I?ve picked up over the years and I?m going to share them with you, now?

Do You?re Homework

This rule also goes for in-store shopping, before you go you should know:

What you are looking for
How much do you expect to pay for it
When you are going to need it

Having this knowledge and keeping your focus on the answers will go a long way to curbing excessive spending! I think it was GI Joe who said ?Knowing is half the battle? and was he ever wrong?

Read Reviews

There is a lot more to consider when making a purchases online. Things like shipping time, location, reputation are all contributing factors, which can make the difference between a great shopping experience and a nightmare.

So before you buy, read through the reviews, see what other people are saying. Were they happy with the product? Was it true to advertisement? Did it ship in a timely manner? If it had to be returned was that easy to do?

If the majority of comments are overwhelmingly ?yes? to these questions then you will more than likely have a pleasant experience too. Reading through reviews has really helped me develop my online shopping savvy.

Also, don?t be bashful, write a review in turn & be helpful to the next person coming into that site for a purchase!

Shop Who You Know

These days almost every major retailer, department store and boutique has an online store too. If you already trust a brand then you know what you?re getting and purchasing via their online outlets will work well for you.

They almost always offer free shipping on purchases over a certain amount & if you are unhappy with the product you can go in-person to return rather then spending money to ship it back to the warehouse!

Another bonus?.in-store pick up, some retailers will let you purchase online & pick it up in the store, eliminating shipping costs all together!

Email Subscriptions

I have an email address dedicated to my shopping lifestyle. I use it to subscribe to emails from my favorite retailers like, Victoria?s Secret, Amazon, elf cosmetics and The Children?s Place among many, many others.

They are always sending me coupons, discounts & deals I can use online or in-store. The separate email address ensures that my personal inbox is not being inundated with ?junk mail? and when I am ready to do major shopping I check the email before I go.

I managed discounts up to 40% on purchases for back to school clothes for the kids! In fact, I haven?t paid full price for anything in forever!

I think the most important thing to remember is keep an open mind and enter this 21st century world with eyes wide open because an educated consumer is a responsible shopper & responsible shopping is what it?s all about IntheClotheset!

(AP) ? Yahoo Inc. fired Carol Bartz as CEO Tuesday after more than 2? years of financial lethargy that had convinced investors that she wouldn't be able to steer the Internet company to a long-promised turnaround.

To fill the void, Yahoo's board named Tim Morse, its chief financial officer, as interim CEO. Bartz lured Morse away from computer chip maker Altera Corp. two years ago to help her cuts costs. Yahoo, based in Sunnyvale, Calif., said it is looking for a permanent replacement.

The shake-up was initially reported by the All Things D technology blog.

Bartz's austerity campaign has helped boost Yahoo's earnings, but the company didn't increase its revenue under her leadership at a time when the Internet ad market has been growing.

Bartz's inability to snap Yahoo's financial funk, along with recent setbacks in an online search partnership with Microsoft Corp. and an investment in Chinese Internet giant Alibaba Group, proved to be her downfall.

Yahoo has now replaced three CEOs in a little over four years. During that time, Yahoo has been losing ground in the Internet ad race to online search leader Google Inc. and Facebook even though its website remains among the world's most popular. Her ouster comes with 16 months left on a four-year contract that she signed in January 2009.

Known for her no-nonsense leadership and sometimes gruff language, Bartz arrived at Yahoo as a respected Silicon Valley executive who had won praise for turning around business software maker Autodesk Inc. But she had no previous experience in Internet advertising, the main way that Yahoo makes money.

That void on her resume immediately raised questions whether she was qualified for the job, and those doubts only escalated as Yahoo's revenue continued to sag.

At first, Bartz blamed bad timing; she started the job during some of the bleakest months of the Great Recession. Later, she would say that she inherited such as mess from her two predecessors, Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang and former movie studio boss Terry Semel, that it would take time to get Yahoo back on the right track.

At one point, she even compared her challenge to those that faced Steve Jobs when he returned to Apple Inc. as CEO in 1997.

Unlike Jobs, Bartz, 63, never was able to articulate a strategy to win over investors.

"She focused on plugging holes in the ship instead of turning it around," said Gartner Inc. analyst Ray Valdes.

The disappointing performance was reflected in Yahoo's stock price, which closed at $12.91. That's 81 cents, or 7 percent, higher than where Yahoo shares stood when Bartz was hired as CEO. During the same period, Google's stock price has risen by more than $200, or 66 percent.

Bartz never hit any of the price targets that the board set for her when she was hired, a shortfall that meant none of the 5 million stock options that she received upon signing her contract ever vested.

Investors seemed happy to see Bartz go. Yahoo shares gained 81 cents, or more than 6 percent, in extended trading late Tuesday.

Although Bartz's exit as CEO came suddenly, her departure isn't a shock. The pressure to replace her grew earlier this year after Bartz acknowledged Yahoo's search partnership with Microsoft wasn't' producing as much revenue as the companies anticipated. Then, in May, Yahoo stunned investors by disclosing that Alibaba had spun off an online payment service in a move that threatened to diminish the value of Yahoo's investment in the Chinese company.

Alipay in July agreed to a complex settlement that could eventually be worth more than $1 billion to Yahoo, but there were too many uncertainties in the deal to placate shareholders.

Yahoo Chairman Roy Bostock had steadfastly stood behind Bartz whenever she was attacked by investors or analysts. In a Tuesday statement, Bostock thanked Bartz for "her service to Yahoo during a critical time of transition in the company's history" without providing an explanation for why the board decided to replace her.

BGC partners analyst Colin Gillis said Yahoo's board "has got to look in the mirror here."

"Swapping the CEO without swapping the (board) chair doesn't solve your problem," he said. "The person that hired Carol to begin with deserves to share the culpability."

With its stock sagging and its management in limbo, Yahoo could be more vulnerable to a takeover attempt by a private equity group or another opportunistic bidder attracted to what remains one of the Internet's best-known brands. Microsoft offered to buy Yahoo for $47.5 billion, or $33 per share, in 2008 only to be rebuffed.

This week's Ask Engadget inquiry is coming to us from Ryan, who can't wait to get his kid fixated on the wonderful world of computers. If you're looking to send in an inquiry of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.

"My son (five years old) has commandeered my wife's laptop for his game-playing pleasure lately, and it's been driving her batty. He basically only plays the games she does (Plants vs. Zombies, Zuma, etc.). So far he's able to find the games he wants (by their icons) and open them without issues using Windows 7, but now that I'm looking into getting him his own basic computer I'm beginning to wonder if there isn't something more kid-friendly out there. I've had cursory experience with OS X and Linux (Ubuntu), and I'll be doing all the installing and setup myself. Any thoughts from parents? Thanks!"

Kids and computers. Now that's a recipe for awesomeness. Any new(ish) parents out there have any experience on their kids loving / hating a certain OS? Feel free to drop your advice in comments below -- let's keep it intelligent, okay?

Choosing Energy Efficient Light Fixtures ? Energy

Finding the best combination of light bulbs and energy saving fixtures are important considerations when designing and building today?s modern homes. Additionally, home sellers understand that energy efficient homes are more desirable and more likely to sell at a higher price than a comparable home without energy saving fixtures. When considering which home improvements are likely to result in the greater return, installing energy efficient light bulbs is an important consideration.

Replacing old incandescent lighting with compact fluorescent lighting is an easy way to save money and energy, second only to improving the quality of a home?s insulation, heating and cooling systems. The two most familiar types of energy saving lighting are old-style fluorescent tubes and the newer, compact fluorescent light bulbs, or CFLs. CFLs have become far more affordable and are in greater demand than the old tube-style light bulbs. Older fluorescent light tubes are still being used for energy savings in buildings that require lots of direct overhead lighting.

Fluorescent lights have long been known for their energy efficiency, although they remain unpopular for the color quality of their light. Fortunately for today?s homeowners, energy saving compact fluorescent bulbs are available in many different sizes, shapes and styles. Fluorescent light fixtures are can be used in any location where a lot of light is needed, such as kitchen lighting, under cabinet lighting, bathroom ceiling lighting and commercial lighting conditions. As a result of advances if compact fluorescent lighting and lighting fixtures, CFL bulbs have gained acceptance in home and offices everywhere.

Energy saving fluorescent lights are now available in a wide range of spectrum and lumens that can fulfill the needs of any lighting situation. CFL bulbs that produce full spectrum fluorescent lighting are gaining in popularity in country kitchens, offices and many other applications where natural lighting is preferred. Full spectrum fluorescent lights are also available for growing indoor plants and gardens.

Compact fluorescent lights are designed to replace the traditional incandescent light bulb, and are the easiest way to improve the energy efficiency of a home, office, or commercial lighting applications. Compact fluorescents have evolved in size and shape becoming even more compact while providing an acceptable range of lighting with minimal energy consumption. Unlike incandescent light bulbs, fluorescent light bulbs cannot be used with a dimmer control, which can be an issue in some interior design cases.

CFL Bulbs have gone through a series of technological advances that have enhanced their design and function over older tube-type models. New compact fluorescent feature smaller sizes, longer lives, instant-on and the same energy efficiency as earlier models. This makes them a good match for most lighting fixtures in a multitude of decorative styles. Naturally, CFL bulbs cost more at first, but buying incentives are available to help reduce the initial cost of replacing incandescents with CFLs. With consumers and business owners everywhere searching for ways to cut costs, installing CFL bulbs now will result in saving as much as 30% in energy costs over the long term

Compact fluorescent light bulbs are destined to advance in energy savings technology, efficiency, and design. Whether decorating the home or office, compact fluorescent lighting and fixtures are the best and most economical choice for every lighting situation. Other factors that should be taken into account when determining the right type of lighting fixture include the porportion of the room, its function and decor, the reflectivity of the surfaces being illuminated, and the type and? amount of work being performed at a particular location.

These articles can be very inspiring, hope the practical knowledge was useful. Thanks a lot for reading.

Question by Robyn: How much energy does a plug-in radiator use?
My bedroom upstairs is a converted attic. No heat, no air. So, I use a plug-in radiator to heat the space. It gets toasty in about 2 hours?but how much energy is it using? Are plug-in radiators energy hogs?

Best answer:

Answer by richard p
yes, they are quite energy inefficient. The amount of power usage is required by law to be affixed to the unit, usually expressed in wattage. Electric heat is not as efficient as most other types of home heating. Really, if you can, put on extra layers of clothing. The difference in your electric bill will allow you to buy two or three new sweaters per year.

FreshStay.com Reaches 5000 Members - Article Details

FreshStay.com now has more than 5,000 reasons for hotels to go smoke-free. With the addition of nearly 200 new hotels, including numerous Comfort Suites hotels, FreshStay.com now has more than 5,000 properties that are committed to being 100% non-smoking.

?Reaching 5,000 hotel partners is a milestone that we are not only proud of, but it speaks to the growing commitment throughout the hospitality industry to the health and comfort for Frequent Breathers everywhere,? says Ray Burger, Founder of FreshStay.com. ?Eliminating smoking isn?t just a trend, or isolated in a few geographic regions anymore. It?s proven to improve guest satisfaction and increase profitability.?

?We truly believe that it should be standard operating procedure for all hotels, motels, inns, and B&Bs everywhere.?

As the world's leading online directory of smoke-free hotels, FreshStay.com now has partners in all 50 states, Canada and around the globe.

Among those properties are more than 600 Comfort Suites hotels within the U.S.

?The Comfort Suites brand made the decision to go smoke free in 2007,? says Christina Williamson, senior director of brand planning and management for the Comfort brand family. ?We knew that providing a healthy, smoke-free environment to our guests and our employees just made good business sense. Comfort Suites is focused on providing a relaxed and renewing healthy environment that enables guests to leave hotels feeling refreshed, so it was also a strong fit with our brand promise.?

?Today we have more than 640 domestic Comfort Suites hotels and all are 100% smoke free.?

?We appreciate the support of this important lodging initiative that Choice Hotels and Comfort Suites properties provide to guests that prefer Better Indoor Air Quality when they travel,? says Burger.

Changing Times

For each of FreshStay?s 5,000 partners, each has its own unique reasons for extinguishing smoking. Many are reaching out to their increasingly health conscious guests. Some are just tired of cleaning up the smoke, ash, and burn marks that come from allowing smoking. Others have found that isolating smoking rooms or smoking floors is simply an exercise in futility.

Then there are those who are tired of turning away paying guests because the only rooms left to book are the smoking rooms.

?More and more midscale guests are demanding a cleaner, fresher stay and healthy accommodations.? The number of guests requesting smoke-free accommodations has risen significantly in the past decade,? says Williamson. ?We saw the opportunity to meet our guests? needs.? At Comfort Suites hotels, we have larger than average guest rooms that are 100% smoke-free so guests can truly experience a ton of ?Breathing Room? when they stay with us.?

Since the site launched in 2006, FreshStay.com has not only seen its roster grow, but it has implemented numerous upgrades, making it easier for socially responsible travelers to find and book the perfect property.

Listings are broken down by state and by city, with an integrated booking option booking your next stay is as easy as a few clicks of the mouse.

In that time, there has also been a growing awareness on the effects of second-hand smoke, and a movement amongst numerous states and cities to ban smoking indoors.

?An increasing number of state laws are restricting smoking in hotels and other public places, so it?s not just a concern for hotel guests,? says Williamson. ?People have become more sensitive to the smell of smoke, so for Comfort Suites hotels, we found that the best thing to do was to go entirely smoke-free, rather than allowing some rooms within the hotel to remain smoking rooms.??

?We had strong data to support the decision to go smoke-free, but there was some apprehension about turning away any customers,? she adds. ?In the end, the program has turned out to be a great success.? The great majority of customers have a strong preference for a smoke-free room.? Knowing that all our rooms at Comfort Suites hotels are 100% smoke free has actually created more loyal guests for the Comfort Suites brand.?
??
Burger says that FreshStay.com will continue to evolve beyond 5,000 members. Not only will FreshStay.com continue to reach out to both hotels and travelers looking to embrace the smoke-free experience, but FreshStay.com will look to include other indoor air quality enhancements. Many FreshStay members have incorporated clean rooms that don?t just eliminate smoking, but also filter out allergens for the most fresh-smelling, restful room possible.

Williamson agrees this is where the hospitality industry is headed.

?People need to be able to relax and sleep peacefully in their hotel rooms, and air quality has a significant impact on their ability to do so,? she says. ?Beyond smoke-free rooms, there is an increasing trend to address other sensitivities and allergies in our rooms.? We continue to look for opportunities to make our guest more comfortable in this way.?

Reaching New Guests
Williamson mentions that one of the key guest targets at Comfort Suites hotels is the business traveler.? Research shows that the business traveler is particularly interested in fitness and health.? In addition to more traditional amenities such as a fitness center and ergonomic chairs, Comfort Suites finds that business travelers really appreciate a smoke-free hotel experience.

Another new member of FreshStay.com, Matt W. Markopoulos of the South Beach Biloxi Hotel & Suites in Biloxi, Miss., says that smoke-free hotels reach across a broad spectrum of guests.

?Being smoke-free is better for overall air quality and benefits everyone,? he says. ?Guests with allergies know they can count entering a fresh room without worrying about the lingering scent of smoke from past guests or guests across the hall?

?If a non-smoker is placed into a smoking room, that creates an unpleasant atmosphere, it?s an impression that could be irreversible in the eyes, and nose, of your guests.?

Opened in October of 2010 with 100 guest rooms on the Gulf Coast, the South Beach Biloxi is a unique ultra-luxury hotel with suites ranging in size from 450 square feet to 1,950 square feet!

?We find partnering with FreshStay.com is a unique differentiator to us, reaching out to an audience that is looking for a smoke-free experience,? Markopoulos says.

Williamson agrees.

?Making the decision to go smoke-free has sustained Comfort Suites as a bold and innovative hotel brand.? Comfort Suites guests appreciate the fact that they can visit any of our hotels and experience a healthy, smoke-free environment,? she says. ?Being a part of FreshStay helps us get that message out and target the right kind of guests we are looking for.?
